Ls1 oil sending units?

Am putting an ls1 in my 69 Camaro. I saw were people have drilled the oil sending unit down by the oil filter. But I was worrying if I can use the stock place up by the intake were the old school oil pressure sending unit was. I now there's a elec plug in the hole rite now could I use that to a elec oil pressure gauge? R that the elec plug out an use a mechi. Oil pressure sending unit an mechi gauge like I have used for the old big block? Any info would be great guys I would like to have it together befor ls fest in ky

Here ya go. An adapter for 1/8" NPT in the original sender location.
I'm using it with a mechanical gauge on one motor and electric sender on another.

Just remember the computer needs to see oil pressure, so as long as you retain the oil pressure sender for the computer, should be fine. I drilled & tapped the blank plate above the oil filter. It was easy, and more accessible. Either way id fine though. Enjoy the LS motor.

You sure the computer needs this? I don't have it setup for mine and it seems to run. I am using the factory hole with the adaptor as shown in the post above.

Computer only NEEDS to see oil pressure if the motor has Displacement On Demand technology. Otherwise, no.

Sorry, i was told i needed to retain the oil pressure sending unit that goes to the engine harness. I have not had a problem where that was an issue, just what i was told when i did my install. My apologies if that was incorrect.

Are you running an LS1 or a newer LSx eng. And i wonder if maybe the newer ones need to retain the Original or Vise Versa?

instrument clusters in newer cars get all their information from the engine computer, so if you left the oil pressure sensor there it really does nothing as most people woun't use a factory cluster from a new car in their swap. Late model motors that have DOD and shut off cylinders, need that oil pressure input for their internal calculations. That's pretty much it. Personally Im using New Vintage gauges, and used that port for the sending unit.

So I can use the stock sending unit hole for a mech oil gauge rite? U guys keep goin back in foth on me. Lol... Am keeping the ls1 stock sending unit the elec one for further use when I redo my car I'll be goin with a new dash an be tuning all elec gauges besides the speed-o. So u guys think this will work for want I want to do?

Use the adapter, hook up your mechanical gauge.
Throw away the LS1 sender, it will only work with the original dash gauge and that runs through the ecu. Your new gauge will come with a 1/8" NPT sender.

Here is my autometer electrical sending unit (go this way for sure as you won't ever have the leaking tube issues). The sending unit doesn't have any trouble clearing the intake.

I had been told an LS3 needed to see it, but found that was incorrect when I did the 376/480 swap a few months ago. There wasn't even a connector for it on the GMPP harness. If you don't want to drill anything, and are worried about appearance, or clearance issues with the firewall or intake, use the above adapter (or one from Autometer) and run an AN 1/8npt to -3 adapter, and you could use hardline or a teflon line to relocate the big ugly sending unit wherever you want it. Easy, and its not that expensive to do.
