      Steering question

I wanted to see if maybe some of you guys could give me an some insight of what might be involved in retrofitting a late model rack and pinion into a 67 mustang

Like Troy did it with his 67 fast forward fastback. He took a 85 Ford Tempo and adapted it to the mustang. What would be involved with this type of endeavor?

Read this from Longacre Racing. http://www.longacreracing.com/articles/art.asp?ARTID=13 Bump steer, Ackerman and Turn radius are just a few of the variables you need to be concerned with.
You can't take any old rack and pinion and throw it in a car and have it work. There are a LOT of design issues that need to be addressed and adapting a rack to an existing suspension is a difficult task. You would be much farther ahead to pick up a good recirc gear box and rebuild your steering system with good quality parts. Don't cut up your car for a "rack and pinion" that steers worse than the old box.

If you leave the knuckle alone and just replace the steering box with a rack, your ackerman will not be changed at all since that has to do with your wheelbase, the angles between the ball joints and the pivot of the TRE. Your turning radius can be kept the same or even improved if you use a rack that has the same or move travel than the stock steering box setup.

Are you looking to custom mount a rack in your car? or do you just want advise on what aftermarket front end to get. I can help with making your own setup but its more of a take-your-pick for the aftermarket stuff

I am looking to custom mount it. I'm trying to make it on a budget which is why i was looking at this option, if not I would just shell out the dough for an after market piece to begin with. any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
