      Lightweight Flywheel

Hey guys my head is spinning! I have a 68 firebird with a Pontiac 350, and will be installing a t56 out of a 02 ss with a 1st gear 2.66 and my rear is 4.10. So my question is lightweight aluminum 15lb or steel 30 lb? or is ther something in between.

For street cars, I always run a SFI rated steel flywheel.

Depends on your intended usage, but I've daily driven an alum LWFW and loved it. And that's in a hilly city.

My experience with the 30lb flywheel and the t56+4.10 combo was it is notably slower reving. I have a 18lb flywheel now and love it. it is very streetable even with my higher RPM engine.

I have had an aluminum flywheel in my Camaro for years and even with a very aggressive clutch it is great to drive. Just get one from a name brand, not some cheap eBay stuff. Any reputable brand will be SFI rated.

I want to swap my steel for aluminum. Mainly for rpm matching and quicker revs. Of course I have a big block with 641 ftlbs and can take off in 2nd without much trouble.

Around 15 is typical for SBC applications and a single disk.

Do you know who you are going to be buying your clutch from? They should be able to tell you or more than likely sell you the right piece.

my mcleod billet steel is 24lbs, and thats .200 thicker than their normal ls flywheel. not sure what a pontiac fw would weigh from them. the aluminum one that i returned was 14-16lbs and it was .200 thicker as well. i will be running 3.73s, 2.66, 3900ish lbs and a 28.5 tall tire. i could go back to the aluminum, but im not sure it will be enough.

Tim, I think you are making a good choice. Heavy, tall first, and tall rear tire.
