Are the axle splines modified for the 1* camber? I know a lot of circle track guys do that, but I always wondered if it was just a matter of modifying the housing and that's it, or if there are more mods required.

Yes, the axle splines where they fit into the drive plate are crowned. Will try to get some pics posted.

      Thanks

Plan is to go with the complete Freakride IFS. Only concern is the budget - - this will set me back $3,700 or so.

Bulletpruf, currently running the Control Freaks IFS front suspension and the triangulated 4 link rear. The suspension is just amazing on the Hornet! My car was a test mule for the Spirit, Hornet platforms. Just cant describe in words the ride and performance difference there is! Plus big weight savings over the stock suspension parts. Will keep following along with your build on your AMC project.

I spoke with Al Kamhi at a recent AMC show in Atlanta and saw one of his demo setups. It's not cheap, but seems to be the right way to go for me.

Nice Hornet (even if it does have a shivverlay motor in it!).

      Thanks

Control Freak setup saves you about 60# in the front.

Picked up a set of used Toyo R888's at Road Atlanta this weekend in the size that I need - 275/40/17. They have a little life left in them, but were bought mainly to use as rollers, check fit, backspace, etc.

Also picked up some nice boxed lower control arms at Road Atlanta from Jeff Puras - he's a retired jet mechanic and does very nice work! Picked up a clean pair of upper control arms from Jeff as well; one of mine has had some welding done to it. Plan at this point is to at least start off with stock front suspension coupled with coil-overs and aftermarket brakes. Here are the boxed lowers -

Got one of the hubs and calipers on. Other side is fighting me.

      Thanks

      Continue to make steady progress...

Started stripping the paint out of the engine compartment.

Rear shocks have arrived, so rear suspension is almost done. Just have to finish up by finding better hardware to secure the leaf springs. Would like to find better leaf spring shackles as well; stock stuff looks a bit thin.

Think I have the hub issue worked out - - the seal on the back of the hub and the bearings were hanging up on burrs on the threaded portion of the axle tube - - chewed up the seals on both hubs. Sanded the burr down and now things are sliding on and off nicely.

One of the axles was too long; Speedway recommends that the end of the axle sit about 1/16" - 1/8" below the level of the drive plate. Driver's side was right at 1/8" below drive plate - good to go. However, the passenger side was .73" below the drive plate. The axles are threaded on the ends so you can screw a bolt in the end (jam nut it w/plenty of red Loctite) to space the axle out a bit, but this would have spaced the axle out too far of the splines in the TrueTrac diff, which only has 1" of splines, and the splines end 1 1/8" outboard of the spacer in the diff. Have a 32.25" axle on the way; it should be dead on or maybe 1/16" too long. If so, I can take a bit off the end to dial it in just right.

Working a deal on brakes - Wilwood 6 piston SL-6 calipers with 12.8" x 1.25" rotors (2 piece w/hats drilled to 5 on 4.5"). Brakes are used, but not all beat up and come with a few sets of Hawk DTC 70 pads (pads are worth about what I'm paying for the entire setup). Also have some drum spindles and hubs on the way. Plan is to rebuild the calipers, use the drum hubs, fab up mounting brackets.

      Thanks

Scott have you looked into the EBC blue stuff. They actually tell you the coefficient of friction vs temperature. About 120 bucks.

Ok, project has been somewhat stalled while I worked on other cars (latest project is a 68 GTO convt, hideaways, strong 455, TH400, 3.90 gear).

Anyway, I'm back on it. Engine is about ready to start on the test stand. Will be closing off some extra holes in the firewall this weekend. Then I can prep and paint the engine compartment (battleship gray) and get started on engine/trans installation and front suspension assembly.

Front suspension will be mainly stock, but with boxed LCAs and coilover shocks - using the kit from WSC Motorsports. Will have to fab a mounting bracket for my Wilwood brakes, too.

Ok, the firewall is starting to look better.

You can pretty much follow the progression of the photos below, but I stripped the paint from the engine compartment a while back. Took it down to the metal.

Then treated with a metal treatment - Picklex 20, I think - kept it from rusting.

Then made some templates for the necessary patches using a sliced up manila folder.

Traced out the templates on a sheet of 18 gauge sheetmetal. Cut them out with a sheetmetal nibbler and then shaped with die grinder, cutoff wheel, hand file, etc. Took quite a while before I had them all fitting just right.

Then I prepped the areas to be welded - ground down to the metal with a angle grinder. After it was down to the metal, I sprayed it with Eastwood's weld through primer.

Since welding thin stuff gives me fits, I called in some experts - local AMC'ers Jeff Reeves and Jeff Puras came over to lend a hand. Jeff Reeves laid down some nice beads and affixed the sheetmetal patches to the firewall. Most were lap welds; only one butt weld. Anyway, big thanks to the 2 Jeffs for their help; it came out great.

I then ground down the welds with an angle grinder and painted with more Eastwood primer. Next step is to strip and prep the entire engine compartment for primer and paint.

      71 Javelin Road Racer Build

Nice! I just picked up a '71 Gremlin for my son, and we're seriously considering the Control Freak front, and fabbing our own 3-link for the rear.

      Fellas -

Build is stalled. Moved to Korea in 2013 (active duty Army) for a 2 year tour. Headed to Italy this summer - going to Naples. Think I'm going to take the Javelin with me, but will probably need some help to finish it.

Think I can do all the rest of the work; have tools and fair amount of know-how, but will need someone to oversee and advise.

Does anyone know of someone who consults on projects? I don't mind paying a fair price; just need someone available via e mail and possibly periodic phone calls.

Please post here or PM if you know of anyone who would/could handle this.

      Thanks!
