Ford dealer says throw away 99 ford taurus

I have a 99 taurus with 77,000 milesand the car runs but once in a while it will quit due to computor. Ford says the ECM is bad and Ford says it is obsolete. Possibly for 1200.00 they can find one but can't promise.

With all of the burn and flashing I read about can't I go get one and have it reprogrammed?

Sorry its not a pro touring question but you guys will give me the best answer.

      Thanks

Or you could do a aftermarket one. Megasquirt or something, just a thought. Would have to have it tuned but might still be an option.

http://car-part.com/ is the site I use to find any used parts I might need. I have no affiliation, I was just a mechanic a handful of years ago and we used it quite a bit to find junkyard replacement parts.

there's bout a billion and twelve tauruses on the road and in the salvage yards, souldn't be too hard to get a new computer, if in fact that is the problem. IIRC, some of that era had wiring harness issues.
dealers really don't want to be bothered w/ older cars like that, find a good independent repair shop.

About 15 years ago my wife's Eclipse had an intermittent ECM shut down problem. It would just die while driving down the road. The dealer, who at the time was the only good diagnostic station, determined that it needed a new $1,100 ECM. That's in 1995 money. I glady paid the $150 diagnostic fee, picked up the phone, found a used ECM for $180 at a local junkyard, and put it in. It worked fine.

the Ford Taraus is the Toyota Camary of the US. Highest & longest continuous production run sedan in US history. I agree with www.car-part.com. Just be sure to put in your zip code and then in the next pull down tell it to sort by DISTANCE....

Also, the ebay option is not bad either. But a local yard will give you some fall back if there is a problem.
