Need recommendation: HVLP spray paint gun Kit

I'm starting my 68 Camaro Project which, unfortunately, is going to take me a very long time to finish (5-7 years).

I'm seeking a recommendation for a HVLP spray paint gun kit that can put down primer and lay down a fine paint job (ie without orange peel or very little orange peel).

Hopefully one of you guys will be an auto-body tech and have experience.

When you say "kit", are you asking for one gun that can do it all? Or are you looking for a package with multiple spray guns?

Prefer a kit that has at least 2 guns and gravity fed cans with an assortment of different tips (ie 1.0mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 1.8mm, 2.2mm). Any advice or recommendation on brand and model #'s would be appreciated.

you can use an iwata lph 400 or a sata 3000 for all those things ... you get what you pay for.

Start by buying a good primer gun. If it is going to take you 5 years to get to paint, why buy a paint gun now? Sata KLC HVLP is the best primer gun on the market. I can say that because I own a variety of every type of gun out there right now. You can use it to spray your wash primers, sealers, and surfacers. Are you going to use a Spray Polyester on your project? If so Sata Makes a gun specific for that (Sata 100 RP BP), and you can cut back the material screw to spray all the other primers and sealers also. This is an awesome gun!

Check ebay for them. You can steal them if you pay attention. I purchased a 100 RP BP (as a second spray poly gun for when we double gun a complete) for $80 on ebay a few months ago brand new in the box!

When you are ready to paint, the 3000 series Sata is the way to go. I use a 1.4 HVLP for base coats/single stage and a 1.2 RP for my clear coat. Again you don't need these for a while so don't rush into anything. One thing to consider is that you can probably pay a decent painter to spray your car (if you prep it completely) for close to what one of these guns cost. I encourage do-it-yourselfers to pay a pro to at least spray the final paint. With the cost of paint nowadays it just isn't worth the risk of blowing it. You need a booth, a good air compressor, and most importantly a really good dryer and filter system for the air. There are plenty of shops that will rent you a booth for around $200. I bet if you call around and find a painter (with the aforementioned booth and equipment) to spray your car (if you have it all ready for him) for $500-$1000 including the booth rental. If you really have a hard on to spray your own car, pay him to hold your hand. I do that with customers all the time.

Thanks for your information. Theres a lot of good info here. I will have to look into all of this in the next day or so. I have not purchased a gun yet but the main reason I need to buy one sooner is that since I live in Tampa, FL once I sand down to bare metal I have to consider how to protect the panel Im working on. With the humidity down here I will have to do a repair to the panel then at least primer it.
