My brothers and i all want pro touring cars. I have my 79 trans am, my 14 yr old little brother has a 71 trans am and my other 11 ye old little brother wants either this or a karmann ghia (of course he would b the odd ball) lol im trying to convince him to use this with maybe a ls or a 427 that is in the corner of the garage... Only thing would be questionable availability of suspension. But the rest is all here just time and lots of fabrication work!

I just convinced him to take on the project!!! ridetech suspension with black HRE rims and silver paint with black logos. Only thing is that he wants to keep the corvair motor in it but it is a spyder motor and he wants to supercharge it or turbo it.

Yes im very lucky to be born into this family and so excited to take over my dads business and run things once i get out of school. Hopefully i can make it all new and improved. At one time my dad had 115 cars on our 7 acres!!! All pontiacs and chevys from 1930- 1980. But now we just have our cupple little toys. My dream is to go get my engineering and business degree and start my own/ improve my dads business into the racing restoration industry and i wont stop till its done! Better to start now than never!

You know, it would be real cool to turn the motor and trans around to make it mid-engined with a monster turbo and intercooler. I love these old Corvair pickups. I remember my uncle's when I was a kid and it was not very old. They are one of the coolest trucks ever made.

I know you've got some plans in the works, but what about putting a Nova/ Camaro subframe into it, or drop it on a an A body frame or something, mostly for better aftermarket support. Remember the fellow that has a couple Corvairs on G body frames? Just gotta make the wheel base work and then go to town.

You could still mid engine it even with the car frame. I wonder if it would understeer with the engine out back? Either way it would be a cool project!

Good point on the frame! I didnt think about that. I think we will do an A body frame under it and move the k member back and stiffen the front to put a chevy 350 in the rear (after a rebuild). Good point on the understeer too. It shouldnt be much but it will probably happen so we may put some kind of wieght in the front to keep the tires planted on the road. Talked to my little brother and we are going to a local junkyard and possibly buying a frame. Hopefully wheelbases are close on something!

Terminal oversteer in the corners would be the issue I would worry more about. Just watch old Porsche 911's on a track. Once that rear engine gets swinging around, it does not want to stop.

I would go mid-engine. If you want you can use a Corvair Saginaw 4 speed and flip the ring gear to make it work. Otherwise there are some Porsche transaxles that you can get adapter plates to mount to a small block or LS motor.

A motor sitting in the middle of the bed would look cool. You could even run Hilborn stacks for an intake and not obscure your view.

Yea, we plan to go midengine and we have a chevy 350 with a cam and a hilborn injection that just needs to be rebuilt that could fit. It will definatly be a sweet ride once its done! Cant wait to get it done but it will be a budget build and will take some time as i only get 2 days off a week.:/. We are thinking to get all the mechanical and drivetrain finished first and drive it with the bodywork unfinished for now but eventually go silver and black.

Like cornfed said, "terminal oversteer" would be even worse than what chevy had to deal with with a corvair! They would just spin out in fast turns making Ralph Nader take slight notice(along with a few other issues!)......can't wait for you to get started!
