      Vintage Aircraft Anyone?

I know there are a few guys here that have worked in the aerospace industry and some who are just fans of old planes. These are some photos I took a while back during the 100 Years of Naval Aviation show here in Coronado.

The oldest plane here is an exact replica of the Navy's very first plane, or sea plane, can't remember. They actually put it on the water and was planning to fly it but running the engine on the bay was as far as they got.

There were many, many planes that I didn't take a pic of due to camera issues. They tried to get one of every version of Navy planes still flyable for the Parade of Flight. There were many vintage Army Air Corps planes too. Quite a few B-25's, 29's, P-51's, Dive Bombers,......

There were certainly alot of those here. This particular one came into the hangar in the back of a semi trailer.

I really dug the WWII fighters. When the Mustang flew by you could tell it was the bad dawg of the bunch. It sounded like a Top Fuel Dragster amongst a fleet of Prius'.

Is it wrong of me to want to sneak in there and steal that engine in the 1st pic and drop it into a Model T rod? I like a lot of the pre-WWII and WWII aircraft, like pretty much all of them. I'm also fond of any aviation themed automobiles as well. The Laboratoires car is one of my favorites and am still waiting to see someone drop a rotatory aviation engine in an old car to make a WWII fighter themed build.

Cool pics. Some friends (the club I'm in) put on a really cool car show at the air museum in Wichita in September. It is a really cool show cause we get to park under and around all the planes and go into the museum and pilfer there also! Also a couple good bands play too!
So, it almost goes without saying that car guys usually like planes too!
Here is the flier if someone wants to come.

Just ordered a new flight headset today (Clarity Aloft) and was actually daydreaming a little about how I could use it with the car..... Cars and planes belong together.

Rob McGaffin the other day posted a video on facebook about the old PBS special on the Kee Bird. A B-29 that had been abandoned in Alaska for over 50 years and they tried to get it running and fly it back to the United States but the thing caught fire and sank to the bottem of the lake. Tragic story.

I have seen that twice and it almost makes a true aircraft person cry. Then you have the mechanic that pass away while work on the Keebird. I think it was in Nova Scotia, Iceland, or Greenland.

I restored vintage aircraft for 20 years before getting into the hot rod biz. I will have to post some pics to show a few of the ones I restored over the years. I also own a wood propeller manufacturing business and I think the prop on that gray Hisso powered Standard is one I built, but need to check my old production records to verify.

I was thinking of you, Mike, when I was taking these pics. I knew you were big time into old planes. I have a close pic of the placard of it somewhere. Maybe it tells who re-did the plane and you could possibly bounce that off your records.

It was restored by Frank Schnelling, and I did not build that one from my records. I did build one for Rhinebeck Aerodrome though for this Hisso powered Standard

I also built the prop for this SPAD XIII and many more

No doubt that the Standard you did work for was here at one point in it's life. North Island Naval Air Station is the birthplace of Naval Aviation and was actually an Army post before that. It's amazing the history on this little island.
Mike, if you ever come out to Coronado we will put you up in the Hotel Del for a night. My wife is in a management position there and gets a great rate. I'm wondering if they will do a 101 Years of Naval Aviation?
