GM LS Computer Running Older Engine...Possible?

I am currently running EFI on my Pontiac 455 using the Retrotek Speed multipoint set up. Runs good. I would like to know if anyone has experience, or knows of anyone using a GM LS based ECU on a non LS motor. I would like to do the conversion to eliminate the distributor, use the coil packs, reluctor wheel, etc. Any information? Give me some feedback. Thanks.

I am doing this with MegaSquirt, on a 79 TA, much easier to work with. Latest version supports sequential ignition and fuel. Keep in mind that the distributor can not be entirely eliminated. There still needs to be an oil pump drive and sequential ignition and fuel requires a cam signal. As well as a 36-1 trigger wheel. When you mention reluctor wheel are you referring to the 36-1 trigger wheel? the reluctor wheel is the sensor in the distributor.
Check the Thirdgen.org forums for using the stock GM ECU.

EFI Connection makes a setup to run an LS based PCM on an LT1, TPI or Ramjet style fuel injection. All are Chevy engines, so I can'[t say if it will work on anything other than that.

Yes, I was referring to the trigger wheel. I already have a 36-1 wheel available to me. The oil pump will be driven by a custom machined distributor shaft. As for the other components, I want to run as many factory GM parts as possible. While I see you are running Megasquirt, that is not something I want to run. Looking to keep it as close to what GM is using as possible in order to be allowed to use the available tuning of HP Tuners, EFI Live, etc., and to be tuned by any knowlegable tuning shop as an LS would.

MegaSquirt uses all GM sensors by default.

I have had this very idea for an Olds motor for over a year. I have yet to get past brain storming yet but I have put a lot of thought in it and I think it can be done.

I second the thirdgen.org for information. Look specifically in the "DIY PROM" and "DFI and ECM" forums. I know there are a few people running this set-up or at least something very close to it.

FWIW, I am running an older GM ECM (1227749) on my Nissan L28 I6, with DIS, I have also converted several other engines/cars to EFI in not so close to factory set-ups, so I like where you're going with this.

I know the thread is a few days old but I figured I'd put my 2 cents in.

The EFI connection link is your best bet to be able to use an LS computer. Most of the parts to convert to 24x will come from the Vortec 350s IIRC. I looked into that for my TPI IROC before I decided on a motor swap. You'll need a dizzy, a crank position sensor, new timing cover, and a few other parts from a Vortec motor that I can't remember off the top of my head. And of course you'll need a TPI fuel system since it's standard cooling. From there you'll need the LS coil packs, a means to mount the coil packs, plug wires, etc. There will also be some wiring that you'll need to do if I recall correctly as well. It's been a while since I was looking into it but I hope that points you in the right direction. If you have any more questions you can PM me and I'll dig up all the info that I have from when I was looking into it. I can also help with the TPI setup as well since i'm pretty familiar with those motors.

      Hope this helps you.
