I have one on my 65 mustang, I use it to pull it onto the trailer. i will try to find a picture. My dad made it from 1/2" aluminum and bolts onto the frame.

I use this on my Z06. Like Bryce, I've found it it useful for trailering, pulling the car into position on the lift, etc.

We'll be putting something similar on Unfair, along with tie-downs hooks on the frame.

I will be putting tow straps on my car. Just a simple loop of tow strap fabric fastened to the frame.

      Edit: Found a foto.

thanks for the photos now tow hooks are for when you trailer your car that's the main purpose...so if you don't trailer it then tow hooks are useless right?

Many HPDEs require tow hooks. They'd be used to pull your vehicle out of the sand or gravel in case you go off-course.

I've never used the toe hooks for the trailer - as John posted some HPDE's require them and many of the sanctioning bodies require them in the rules. It you want to tie the car down in a trailer do it properly.

For the front I have a bracket that bolts to the bumper supports with a heavy duty eye bolt screwed into it. Rear has a long eyebolt that runs through a frame rail. Both can be removed for street use.

If you're installing tow hooks that might be used on a road track it has to be strong. Think about pulling a 3500 lb car out of a sand trap thats up to it's axles. The track tow guys need to get the car out and tow hooks make it quicker and easier for them. If your car doesn't have them they'll hook whatevers handy which might add to whatever damage the car already sustained so it's in your best interest to have good, easy to use hooks.

You use the tow hook to winch the car on to the trailer. Not to tie it down.

Exactly. I'm not too keen on the steel plate designs (some are aluminum). I'm just not sure they are up to the job of hauling a big-ass car out of the gravel. Mine is a 3/4 -16 forged steel lift hook rated to 6000 lbs, attached to the frame with a TIG-welded threaded end on a 4130 tube that is bolted to the frame with 4 3/8 bolts. That's a tow hook.

I need to put one on the back too, but haven't found a strong enough mount. Some of the Z06 guys use the exhaust hanger bolts, and I'm just not convinced that's strong enough.

No... Most people use the toe hook to winch the car in to the trailer. Some would try to use them as a tie down...

I use this tow hook to pull my drag car on the trailer. Then I have other tie downs. I used 6061-T6 aluminum it has an ultimate tensile strength of 45000psi. My tow hook has a cross sectional area 1 square inch. Should be good!

NASA requires a 2" ID hole for tow hooks.
