Which engine hoist? REcommendations or ones to avoid?

May be in the market for an engine hoist & wondering if there are any that people recommend, or ones to definitely stay away from.

      Thanks

I bought the 1 ton engine hoist from HF. Don't get that one. I should have upgraded to the 2 ton, but they were out of stock. The main issue is reach. Quality seems to be good and the folding legs are really nice.

I bought the 2 ton from Pep Boys, but Northen Tools carries the same Torin/Big Red brand.
It has worked great. I also left it overnight holding the engine without a tranny, it did not leakdown one bit after 12 hrs.
I got it with an incorrect price, which was too good to pass.
Mine has travelled a bit, pulled/installed several engines, bodies, and frames.
It tucks pretty well into something you can shove in the corner, but it still weighs a bunch.
Maneuverable enough. My only dislike is the Chinesium in it. Now they even include the leveler!
We have only used carb plates so far. Maybe next LS swap we can use the leveler...

I got a 2 ton HF and used it to pull an iron 351w and FMX out, it did bind along the way and was partially lifting the front of the car (not off the ground though). The chevy side of the family even has the same HF hoist and pulled and installed a 454 that windowed itself driving down the road after a coolant leak turned the oil into the dreaded milkshake. No pepboy hoist drama here.

If you want the absolute best, Irvan-Smith has their's which most NASCAR teams use, but it's $1000. I would look for a used Carolina tool (not produced anymore) or Bluebird KD 1500 (what Irvan-Smith is based on), a fresh rattle can job and new cylinder can get you a good used USA made hoist for under $500.

I just bought the Harbor Freight 2-ton myself with leveler for 200.00. I believe its on sale till 3/14. I used it to pull my motor this last weekend. No problems. I used a friends a couple years ago (same model) and pulled both the motor and trans using the leveler. The leveler quality leaves something to be desired but still works fine.

I have the same 2-ton model. A few years ago i yanked the engine from 87' jeep wrangler and it actually did lift the front wheels off the ground.(little bit). And just a few weeks ago i used to lift my new engine. No problems with it.

Their engine stand however, leaves a lot to be desired.
