Shipping a motor?

Hey everybody,

I have been comtemplating swapping to LS, and now its time to take the plunge. I think I have a relative that might want my 468BBC, but I have no idea where to start in terms of getting him shipping quotes or how to ship it.

I assume I would need to crate it somehow, but that's about alll I can assume. I don't even know can I buy a crate for the motor or do I have to build it etc.

If there is somewhere online I can look to get ideas or any members with experience shipping motors can give me a rundown I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Hey Brad, looks like we are in the same town. I have a steel cradle and crate to ship motor but it is for a small block. I've never run a big block but I am pretty sure dimension wise the cradle might bolt up. The shipping hub is in North Highlands. I shipped 650 lbs to Indiana and it cost the guys that built my motor about $300.00.

I just sold my BBC and bought an L92 from Travis but luckily he's not that far from me so I was able to pick up the new motor. I did build a crate to ship the BBC and the guy contacted FEDEX commercial to come pick it up from my garage.
Here's how I built the crate. I started with a 3/4" piece of OSB (or plywood) then fastened three 4x4" to the bottom so it could be moved with a pallet jack or fork lift. I then fastened the motor to a metal engine storage stand that can be bought for $30 +/- at a swap meet or Harbor Freight (Boo for Chinese stuff). Lowered the motor and stand down on the OSB base and bolted it down. Then I cut 2x2" and screwed them down to the perimeter to fasten the sides to. I used 1/2" OSB for the sides because I had plenty of scrap laying around. I screwed that to the base and then dropped 2x2" down the sides to connect the corners. Then 2x2" around the top of the sides to fasten the top to. I also fastened (2) 2x4" to the top to keep the shipping company from stacking things on top. It successfully went from Indy to Texas with headers, front runner system and air cleaner attached. Not sure how much he paid to ship it, but I had 6-8 hours building the crate. I'm pretty slow (probably why our house remodel is still going on...)

No need for a crate. I just got an ls2 shipped from Wisconsin to Ontario. It was strapped to a pallet with two steel straps. An old floor mat protected the top and it had an engine bag over it to begin with. No scratches. Even if you crate it, it has to go on a pallet. I shipped through R&L but that was business to business and that included forlifts. If you need lift gate service the jack goes up. I think it was Travis that once gave me a quote from www.engineshipping.com. I imagine with a name like that, they can take care of you.

Check out http://www.freightquote.com. They deal with a lot of different freight haulers and can shop you the best rates. If you call them they can answer any of your shipping questions. Great people to deal with and good freight rates.

Check with Forward Air, too.

I recently shipped an engine through them, and it was easy. They have warehouses near airports. You drop it off at the closest one to you, and the buyer picks it up from the one closest to them. They'll forklift it into/out of a pickup for ya. Best price I could find.

We built the crate out of a HD shipping pallet.

We bolted the engine storage stand legs to the pallet, and ran some 2x4 legs down from the accessory bolt holes both in front and in back of the engine. Then we built the walls up from the pallet's sides, and made a top for it to seal it all up.

I shipped a motor on a recommendation of a memeber over at LateralG.net. Echo Global was the place and I was referred to Kurt Williams. Everything was great and the price was way cheaper than I found on Frieghtquote.com. even with insurance. They came right away and the motor was delivered in a couple days. Great service and very helpful. PM me for a number.

Last couple days been hectic, my relative can't take on this project - his wife won't let him start another one, (he's in the middle of 2)... So that options gone so listed it for sale and actually have a guy fairly local who's looking to get it.!!!

So might not need the info after all...

But thx for all that helped!! That's partly why I love this site...
