      Project "WhyTry" again....

Yeah, yeah, yeah.... I know they are really never done

Here is my 68 Camaro, been around awhile as it sits now, but about to be torn apart and done slow n steady, so I have decided to go LS, and am in the planning stages still of which motor to go with, I am on a budget so I am leaning towards one of the Iron block setups probably the LQ4 for the lower compression. I have begun the tear down of my current Procharged 468 BBC and all that will remain is the F1R Procharger. I am looking at the LQ4 with maybe the 317 heads as I have read they work better than the L92 heads for Forced Induction, if I am wrong or headed in the wrong direction please correct me.
My plans now are for a Procharged LS of some sort and keep the TKO-600, minitub and new wheels or get the rears re-hooped to 18x11's. I am also going to go with the C6Z06 Front brakes and not sure on rears yet.... It already has HID Projector headlights taken from a 7 series BWM, LED tails, Integra seats and custom center console with heated seats....

It is airbagged upfront with leaf springs in back with Airride shockwaves, but plans are for a minitub and still trying to figure out if I want to run a 4-link or torque arm, I really don't plan on making it an all out corner carver more of something fun and handles much better than leaf springs... I am going to run airbags in rear as well, and either of these combos will allow me to swap out the air for coilovers if I wanna track it....

Sounds like a solid plan to me. With as much power as you'll be making, the extra weight from the iron block won't matter. being able to easily rebuild it in the future if you desired is also a bonus I think. I've never heard that the 317 heads are better or worse than the L92s. Both are great cylinder heads honestly. Since you're on a budget, I would look at what your power goals are first. Then you can decide which way will get you to those goals. The 317 stuff should be much cheaper than the L92 parts since they are older and not as in demand. If they will give you the performance you want, well then I think that would be the best way to go.

THX, mini update. I have sold the motor, carb, bonnet, and ignition already. I am starting to put my rear suspension together, going with G-bar I think..... Also DSE Tubs at this time too, since my rearend is blown (again) will be pulling it soon, the car is up on jackstands already, tranny is out going to go to a hydraulic setup for the Mcleod RST clutch on the TKO-600. Any input is appreciated from anybody who has done this conversion as I will be trying to do this at home. From what I can tell there are several kits out there, but is there one that has had the most success?

Also changed to the L92 heads, thx Trey, I did more research and it looks like they are better than I originally thought....

So more pics to follow soon. Also might rewire the car while I'm at it, which brings me to a question. When I get my LS, might be from Travis, more than likely.... Do I use that harness for the whole car or do I tap into the stock harness from my car and the only wires I uses are for the new motor, acc, etc..... Mainly asking because I want to rewire the rat's nest under the dash and into my center console now, So trying to decide if I should get a new updated harness like AAW or what....

Hey Brad - I'm still in process, but here's what I know. You can use your existing harness if you wanted to and simply power up the ECM and related eingine harness that you get from Travis. It sounds like you're knee deep into this and if I were you (I'm not) I'd re-wire the car. AAW and others give you lots of circuits/control modules/options...

I'd get with AAW and see what they can do for you. Typically, you just tap into existing power sources to power the PCM and fuel pump if it's not already electric. You'll have to add relays and fuses as necessary. AAW should be able to supply you with a harness and power block that either allows you to add the relays and fuses as needed or they'll already be there and you'll just tap into those. I'm not sure if they can supply a PCM/engine harness though. For that, you can do it yourself or SpearTech can build one to your specifications.

THX guys, so LS3 intake instead of LS6, or if budget is good, maybe FAST, if its that much better, but I don't know yet, we will see how this things starts to play out budget wise 1st...

IMHO - If youre going w the L92s than the LS3 intake is the way budget wise. If you can swing it, the FAST intake will make between 8 and 22 more hp (depending on who you believe), but that drives other set up questions like throttle body, etc. If you go with the FAST, you will be about as set as you can be should you decide to add stroke/cubes, swap out to CNC heads, etc.

C'mon Brad. Spend those duckets! jk Bro. Love your project...

yeah I agree it's really gonna depend on how much the motor/harness/accessories, cost to get to fit into my Camaro, once I get that part of the equation I will know what I can do on the go-faster goodies. But I know with the F1R I should have plenty grunt!!!

N thanks Ron, I appreciate the words

You have to use an LS3/L76 intake if you go with the LS3/L92 heads. The LS6 intake does not fit those cylinder heads. As for the FAST 102, I believe it's called that, it should work well but it will not be cheap. I would worry about it later. Get the engine in the car, running, and working first. Changing an intake or throttle body later on will be simple. One word of caution, do not go overboard on a throttle body. A ported 90 will be fine for the engine. Any bigger and your throttle response will be lazy. I realize you're blown but the lazier your throttle response, the lazier the bypass valve's response and thus boost. You'll want throttle response for enjoyment of driving on the street. If you were a drag car, I'd recommend larger.

^ so true, Trey. I forgot about the boost. Conventional wisdom on boost is to simply port match the intake and let the blower do the work. Also, and I'm no expert on ProChargers + LSx, I'm not even sure you could use the FAST w that set up. The exhaust side is a different animal however...

Well, there's nothing wrong with going to a FAST intake on a blown LSx engine. It will work well and provide better flow and more power. It's just that, in general, people get carried away with the idea that bigger is better. The PCMs on these engines make it so easy to have a streetable combo that honestly is more suited for a drag strip. So many of the factory components on these engines are fantastic and very efficient and simply do not need to be changed in order to make a solid performing engine that is durable. Since Brad mentioned he was on a budget, I'm just trying to point out areas where I would concentrate my dollars to provide the most benefit.

      Thx again Trey!!!

Currently the car has 18x7 and 18x9.5's on it. I have sold my current wheels to a buddy who is letting me still use them to roll the car around for a couple more weeks then I get his stockers and he gets the Budnik Fat lip Fontana's and I get new ones!!!

I am leaning towards a 18x8 front with 265/40/18 and a 19x12 rear with a 335/35/19, final decision on wheels not made yet, but I have always been a fan of the Iforged Aero 3 pc wheel. and it will really show off the C6Z06 brakes I'm going to run on it too!!!
