Beginner chassis/suspension books?

Whats a good book to get to learn about suspension and alignment, ect?

IMO, if you want to know suspension theory, the BEST book to have is "Competition Car Suspension" by Allan Staniforth. He's a Brit, so there's some odd stuff in there; but the book does a great job of explaining roll centers, IC, etc. It was re-issued a few years ago, so should be fairly easy to find.

I wouldn't exactly call those beginner books.

I like the Herb Adams book and "How to make your car handle" by Fred Puhn. Though the latter is more applied with suggestions than theoretical with explanation.

I'd suggest Steve Smith Autosports Publishing's "Building the Pro Stock Late Model Sportsman."

While focused on oval track usage, it is GM based, which 75% of PT builds seem to be, and it covers all the basic theories of geometry and the why and wherefores of changing it from stock as well as how to measure, compare, change and set up front and rear suspensions. I'd recommned this book for any builder, regardless of make they are working on.

+1111110000 gazillion...if you want a no nonsence get to business book to learn from SS books are the go to's.


I have to read marcus's book to recommend it....but based on a few conversations with him, it should be a good one.

Yep before I knew much on handling or traction I was an alignment tech, i then buy Fred Puhn's book and it got stolen later on. I intend to repurchase it.
That book should be school books for mechanics, it makes learning the basics and advanced stuff so easy.
I learned that leaf spurung cars can be made to handle, launch at drag strips and what makes traction and handling, but I would love to read MArcus book, sounds interesting.

That "How to make your car handle" looks very familiar, I think I bought that 20 years ago when I was thinking about doing auto cross with my AMX. I will go rummage around in the attic. Thanks guys!

I, too, would recommend Puhn's book for the beginner. I used the Millikens' book when I was teaching, but that was a class for graduate engineers. You might find my site helpful. I've made every effort to provide information for the high school graduate, though many complain that it's beyond their understanding. I've made no attempt an an orderly exposition. I've just added pages as a subject occurred to me. So, you'll have to do a little digging. Don't neglect the "Getting Started" section on the home page.
