      ipod dock in center console

I have a kenwood kvt 514 dvd player with the ipod connection cable and am looking for a dock station that I can just drop the ipod into. The cable has the locking tabs so I would like to hook that up permanently to the dock so I dont have to **** around with the cable to get the ipod out.I want to custom fit this into my center console so I dont have the ipod floating around the car- any audio guys have a part they use on a regular basis for this. thanks

I have been wanting to do that too. Found a couple of pages where people have done it. I like the third method best, but is a one-off piece, not produced to buy.

I've never found any universal mounts that I've been happy with.
I'm using a Kenwood unit with iPod connection in my DD (2003 Avalanche). I did a similar install into my unused ashtray. I ended up covering the phone in cellophane and taking a mold of the bottom, then using that mold to create a dock plate to which I epoxied a cheap replacement ipod cable. That was my basis of the filler plate. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of the process, but it was pretty simple.
If you have a dock adapter plate such as this you're ahead of the game.

It's really easy to bend/grind away the metal locking nubs on the side of the ipod connector.
I'm also not a fan of having the ipod stick up out of anything. Acceleration of any type can easily disrupt the connection. You'll need to insure you have either a friction fit on the sides, or integrate a positive locking mechanism that surrounds the top of the ipod. Unfortunately it makes the install a little more specific to one ipod. I made my dock a little wider than my widest ipod, and made foam rubber spacers I can insert for different units.

I have a Ipod touch I want to hook up to my Alphine IPod radio. Been looking for something to hold the iTouch as well.

Griffin makes a couple things least to give you a some ideas (not necessarily console mount but I think could be adapted:

Here is a DIY using cheap materials and velcro:

ProClip has some interesting solutions might be able to adapt:

A Custom fiberglass console someone made for their Ipod:

I figure I'll end up making something that holds the IPod stead, maybe within the console, since the Alpine radio can control the Ipod it isn't as necessary to keep it visible.

actually now that i went to the car and thought it out i will probably hide it in the glove box- I do not want it distracting from the dvd screen- and since the Kenwood controls all functions of the ipod I do not need to see it--thanks for the input though

I bought an MB Quart Ipod dock. (its part of their marine line) It looks beautifull, the Ipod fits inside the dock and comes with adapters for all the different types ie. ipod, ipod touch, nano... etc... I paid about $60 Check out this link

I put mine in the glovebox since you don't need to have the unit out to use it. Your Kenwood controls the ipod as well, so there's no reason it has to be out in sight unless you just want it to be seen.
