      4l60e help

My paddle shifter won't shift the trans. Trans shifts fine in auto or manual mode. My lap top shows that the paddles are sending a signal to the TCI CPU. I think it is a short in signal wire from CPU to trans. What do you guys think? What wire sends the signal from the CPU to the trans?
      Thanks in advance BIGVIN.

      Hi Vin,
I'm pretty sure that you have one of our paddle shifters connected to a 1st gen TCI controller. If that's the case, trouble shooting is simple. Our paddle shifter has three test lights: One on the paddle shifter itself and two on the receiver. Tap either paddle to confirm that the test lights flash.

If all three test lights flash, then the paddle shifter is working fine. If there's anything wrong with the paddle shifter, remember that we offer a lifetime warranty.

From there you can view the software "dashboard screen" to see if the TCU is recognizing paddle shift mode as well as paddle shifter inputs. Move your Auto / Mnl mode toggle switch from auto to manual and see if the value changes from zero to a small positive number. Throw the toggle switch back and forth a coupla times to confirm. The problem you have described is usually faulty connection to the mode switch. You can also watch actual vs selected gear changes in the dashboard.

Any doubts, feel free to give us a call. We're slammed these days, but I'll make time for you.
      /Steve

Steve thanks for the reply. The paddles are working fine dashboard is showing that the CPU is receiving the signal the mode switch toggles from manual to auto. Steve what wire or wires send the signal from the CPU to the trans. Am I wrong for thinking its wire related? Thanks for all your help now and in the past.

From the TCU: Blue wire goes to toggle switch> 12v switched goes to the other side of the toggle switch. Red wire is downshift input and yellow wire is upshift input.. But this smells like a weak alternator or bad grounds to me. Is the trans case grounded to the chassis? TCU grounded hardcore?

Steve trans is grounded but I will look at the alt. and TCU ground. Steve I have another ? how is the signal sent from TCU to the trans when paddle is tapped? I mean what is go on in there? I hope this isn't a dumb ?

In automatic mode the TCU determines when to shift by way of TPS and VSS inputs. In paddle shift mode, the TCU reads TPS but ignores VSS. Instead, it waits for you to provide a paddle input.

If you are seeing all three test lights on the paddle shifter, it's working. If, on the dashboard, you're seeing a change in value whens switching from auto to manual mode, the blue wire is working correctly. The dashboard will also show actual gear vs selected gear. Actual gear should change when a paddle input is sent. Feel free to give me a call over the weekend.
