      Compressor - extra air tanks?

I am considering painting my car myself, and need to know if my compressor is up to the task. Here are the stats:

      4.5HP, 21 gal tank
      4.0SCFM at 115psi - 3.2 delivered CFM
      4.4SCFM at 90psi - 3.5 delivered CFM
      11.1SCFM at 40psi - 8.8 delivered CFM

I know the tank is small - what is the possibility of getting extra air storage tanks so that the compressor doesn't have to cycle on as often, to keep from heating up the air too much and causing moisture?

The alternative is to get a proper compressor, but the one I'm looking at is about $1,000 (Bel Aire 218V) and I probably won't use it that often for a while after my current project.

You can do it.... just don't be in a rush.

I am using a Coleman Powermate MODEL NO. CL0602712
      MAX PRESSURE 95 - 125 PSI
      CFM @ 40 PSI 7.7
      CFM @ 90 PSI 6.0
      MOTOR 6 Peak HP
      VOLTAGE/AMPS 120
      AIR TANK 27 Gallons
      PUMP Oil Free, Direct Drive
      WEIGHT 137 lbs.
      LIMITED WARRANTY 1 year

I was looking for the cheapest compressor that did 6.0 CFM at 90 psi.
This was it. It was cheap... $350 CDN

      compressor

no way tom, sorry, but any hvlp still uses 10-12 cfm at 90 psi, you will never be able to pull it off, well you might be able to but it would be no where near right, now you probaly could get a touch up gun and spray jambs etc with it, then rent a booth and spray car out.

Crap, my wife's gonna kill me...

I'd like to find a booth to rent, but I'm concerned that I'd be able to get it done in one day since I want to do stripes. Plus, how much is a day booth rental - $300? I'd rather put that money into a compressor I guess... Or as you said I guess I could do the cut-in at home then assemble and paint the rest in a rental booth.

What do you think about the Belair 218V?

      tom

that bel-aire would be perfect, you will be in a whole new world of air!!
i have a bel aire, the 7.5 hp model, 24 cfm @90 psi, runs 3 spots easy, but i have 1-1/4 hard line also, anyway i would seriously look into either a compressor or renting a booth, you could esily do whole car in one day, just bake the base for a few, and then tape stripes and put main color on, the untape and clear everything 3 coats

      Rent a compressor.....

You could keep the compressor you have and do all of the small stuff as said and then rent a compressor for a couple of days . Unless you don't have a good rental shop you should be able to pull it off.
