      2006 Powerstroke-Quick advise please!

I have an 06 Ford Powerstroke and it is in now for warranty head gaskets and I was going to stud it and had a friend that had some black onyx or (something like that) head gaskets that was sitting on his shelf and I was wondering if they were worth the money or was the stockers good enough? Also should I do the EGR delete kit and if so, where is the best place to get one?
I will prolly chip it after all this gets done and out of warranty, so keep that in mind.

      Thanks!

Definitely do the head studs while the labor is on Ford's nickel. I don't know anything about brand or type of head gaskets. I buy all of my Powerstroke parts from Dennis at ITP Diesel. Great guy, he only sells what he would use on his truck. I know a lot of people that have used his EGR delete kit, among other things.

EGR cooler delete or up grade, head studs, never heard of the head gaskets but if its listed as a better part in regualr use go for it if they will. I also know a lot of people who do away with variable geometry turbos also.

Thanks Lee. I had heard that they yank the cab. It's hard to believe that is easier than working in the engine compartment, but I guess it is!
I'll leave the turbo now since it would be something expensive to do and they prolly wouldn't do it anyway.
I'm still trying to do research on the gaskets tho.

I would 100% recommend the ARP studs. The new redesigned factory head gaskets work just fine with the ARP studs. We have not seen any failures with this setup.

You should check out bulletproof diesel for there egr coolers. They are a better design and come with a lifetime warranty. (which is saying alot on a 6.0)

Also I would recommend changing the engine oil cooler. They will be right there at it so it would only cost you the price of the oil cooler. I know they are expensive but it WILL fail in the furture and then it will really be expensive.

      Good luck!

Thanks guys, I ordered a EGR delete from Sinister today (which ITP is owned by now I guess). Hmm, the oil cooler is something I hadn't thought of. Is the factory one a good replacement or is there another brand that is better?
      Thanks

Factory cooler is fine. Egr delete is a good thing. Be sure to replace STC fittings on the HP oil pump when your this far in.

Wow, I didn't know that about ITP. I haven't had the dough to buy any fun diesel parts in a long while so I guess I'm out of touch. I hope Dennis didn't have to go back to a day job!

Edit: Sounds like they've just rebranded themselves and are still expanding, so I'd say it looks like they're still doing well.

      Rattin, smattin, stinking piece of.....!!!!

Well, there was a weird whistle noise under the hood off and on for a couple months now and I finally took it in and they said they found it....it was the overflow/radiatior cap. I said that doesn't sound good, he said not for you!!!
Freaking head gaskets again!!! He said that he has never seen one come back that was studded. WhooHoo, I'm another "first"!! :-( I don't even drive the thing hard, heck I might full throttle it maybe once a month!! Don't tow that much, some but not alot.
Well $3,000 later and I got new head gaskets, except Ford ones this time and not the Black Onyx (or whatever they were called). I would NOT recommend them.

What else is going to fail on this thing? Is it going to start eating cash at 140,000 miles now?

yeah those black onyx are junk, OEM are stronger. I have lots of buddies with diesels, and I have an 08 6.4L power stroke, and we all use OEM

Well, that's what I got now, stockers.

So, is it gonna start eating maintenance now?

Hmm, I've always used wix and rotella around every 9-10k. Is that too long? I thought it was ok for a diesel. ??

if you bulletproof them, they won't become "maintenance hogs"....i have a lot of buddies that have fixed theirs, and haven't had a single problem since. and they ABUSE them. they play in em, pull them, hot rod them. if built right, the 6.0 is way more than the 7.3 ever was

Wow, didn't know that the 6.hoe would ever equal a 7.3! (with the exception of the cam sensor!)
What are the new 6.7's doing wrong? Problems with them yet?
