painting my grill.

I'm looking to paint the grill on my 73' duster. I have no clue what kind of prep i need to do before i paint it.

I think it cleans up the look a lot.

There are many different options on prep and paint of the grill . If you are looking to just spray bomb it I would just get a good red scuff pad ( I prefer the Mirka brand because the sand great and are soft so they bend into crevices easily unlike the 3M red pads ) and scuff the entire grill . If looking for a semigloss I usually prefer the SEM Color Coat Landau Black . It has a great uniform finish , it holds up great and sticks to pretty much anything. If you want to go the more extensive route you could always scuff it and put a good Flexible Primer on it , then mix up some semigloss black and spray it .. Hope this helps

I think it depends on how much money you want to spend. Cheaply done, should just be a fine grit wet sand, wax remover, and prime and paint. Duplicolor spray paint has a few selections, such as satin finsih, semi-gloss, or flat. I don't think I'd go with gloss.

In my own opinion, the all black doesn't look right. There needs to be something breaking all the space up. Have you considered just painting the grill bars and leaving the chrome? Paint between the main grill, and paint the headlight surrounds black, but leave a little chrome to break it up.

That is an interesting idea, however, the grill doesnt have any chrome. I guess my picture is in an odd light.

I do like the headlight buckets a different color than the rest of the grill. I think I would also match the blinker surrounds the same as the headlights though. However, I might use a darker gray around those areas instead of using the stock light gray. But, it still looks like too much black in the center to me. I think there still needs to be something breaking up all of the black.

But thats just my opinion. I do agree though, changing the light gray to something else will give the car a different attitude.

I dont suppose i could ask you for one more photoshop please. I'm not completely sure how this will turn out, but do you think you could blackout the center grill(like the red one in my last post) and then color the headlight buckets to match the body? On whichever photo is the easiest to do that.

May be a little "mustang-ish", but who knows, i've never seen it done.

Scuff it up with red scuff pad, clean with prep solvent, shoot few coats of Sherwin Williams GBP-988 etching primer in aerosol followed by your choice of paint, no need to sand the primer,just let the primer flash 10 minutes and shoot the paint.

I think it would look good if you made the top strip (at the hood) body color, kept the surrounds the headlights and parking lights factory, and then blacked out the rest.
