There are thread chasers. Summit sells a set.

Otherwise a plug tap would work just fine. I prefer HSS, high speed steel. OSG is a great name brand tap.

Yes, as does Sears, if you want to run out and pick up a set. Thread chasers are better than taps for such jobs as they take out less material and affect the original threads the least.

My main problem was finding a 3/4-16 tap. I have a nice set of craftsman taps but the larger sizes are tapered. I have a set of thread chasers but they only go to 9/16" and are course threaded. I was able to find a good HSS plug tap locally.

Find a good old fashion hardware store, or local induatrial store like Fastenall, and buy a regular tap in bottoming form.
Thread chasers have limited use in experience. I have had better luck with regular taps. Hanson, Irwin are a couple of typical brands found in stores. Lucky me I work in Bloomington Indiana and we still have an old fashion hardware store Called Kleindorfers, which actually I believe is an old local neighborhood grocery store. Or at least built that way.
But issue with bottoming tap is that they have limited use so if its open ended then buy a regualr tapers starting tap as it will be more useful.
