Interesting read. Good to know I've been doing it right with the 15-40 Rotella T Triple Protection. It may cost a few ponies, but at least I know the engine is protected.

The two things to look for in any quality oil is film strength and rate of evaporation. I use Mobil 1 and it is rated @ 1200 psi and 450 degrees respectively-conventional oil of any grade rates @ 350 psi and 230 degrees on average. A lot of other "synthetics" don't give out their data though which leads some to wonder about their quality at least in my mind. I've personally drove 4 vehicles over the years with temps pegged out, no coolant and drove for an average of 15 minutes each like that with no engine damage after fixing the coolant issue. That's proof enough for me.

Same here. I've been using Rotella for the past 5+ years. I read somewhere that diesel oil will supposedly gum up an engine over time. Well, I've had my motor together for almost 11 years and have over 40,000 miles on it. A couple months ago I pulled the valve covers off for the first time, and they looked beautiful on the inside. Just a light film of oil. Before running Rotella I ran Valvoline. I'm gonna keep using the Rotella for as long as I can.
