Oops, now what - how do i determine axle centerline

Not sure if i am posting in the right thread section.... working on a 68 camaro. Installing a full art morrison max g frame into it. Made a big mistake when taking the car apart. I never marked the axle centerline on the quarter panel. I just posted in another thread about tire size and basically came up with a tire size of 26 inches in height. (335 30 R18). I was thinking about pulling a couple of wheels and tires from my 02 camaro to try and eye it up. My friend and I tried dropping plumb bobs from the very inside edge of the wheelwell at the very bottom most part. We came up with 31 inches across making 15 and 1/2 the center of the wheel well. Problem with this is I dont think thats the way its supposed to be done. I look at my other cars and see the tire closer to one edge than the other. Anyone have any other ideas for this????
