      Carb Recommendation

Can anyone help me pick out a carb for a 355 sbc, performer RPM intake, 224/234 @ .050 and .465/.488 cam, fairbanks 200r4 trans with a 2400 stall, 373 posi rearend in an '87 Monte SS. The guy my dad bought the car from had a carb shop Q-Jet that is still computer controlled. We are bailing the computer controlled distributor and carb. The car will just be street driven without ever seeing any track time or hard driving, it's just a cruiser for my dad.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Something around 650-700 cfm with an electric choke would be best.

I like Holleys and Demons, but I know how to tune them.

The best carb for you is the one you have the most experience tuning on.

I run a Demon RS 680 cfm on my 383, which I'd recommend to you if it had a choke. As a cruiser, a choke is a good move. The RS is a competition carb with no provisions for one, but the size and range of adjustment make it work well for me.

Look at the Avengers- fine out of the box carbs for engines like your Dad's.

      Thanks for the info Scott.
I don't have much experience tuning any of them. Probably had more Holleys than anything, but that was mostly 15-18 years ago. Do the Demons tune easily? They have a nice selection chart on their site ( http://www.barrygrant.com/demon/default.aspx?page=5 ) that looked helpful. I was thinking about maybe a 725 Road Demon or a 575 Speed Demon. The Road Demon is suggested for motors with cams that have less than 220 @ .050, dad's motor has 224/234 @ .050. I don't know enough to know if that is close enough to 220 or if they mean ABSOLUTELY nothing over 220. Any thoughts on this?

Scotts right on with the Demon, get a Road Demon in the 6-700 CFM range, they tune a lot like a Holley and size to size usually make more power than a Holley although Holleys are good carbs too.

By the way Scott, I just sent you an email regarding your removable sleeves.

      Scott,
You guys can get one of those new Summit 750 V/S carbs for about $265.

They are a copy of the Holley 4010 which they must be contracting thru Holley to create there own line.
      Good bang for the buck!

      Shaker455,
Thanks a ton for the info. I will get some pics of the carb tomorrow when I'm at my dad's. I'll try to get them uploaded here tomorrow night but it might be late.

Do you think that one of those 750 V/S summit carbs would be too much carb for that motor? For what it's worth, I checked summit today and those carbs are on sale for $251.xx

      Thanks again!

      Shaker455,
I have some pics of the Q-Jet that is on the car (the carb shop 'worked' it, but I don't know what was done). Is there something specific you needed/wanted to see? I took a driver side shot, pass side shot, front shot and an overhead shot. Would you like me to post them here, send them in a private msg or email them?
      Thanks!

Here are the pics. I resized them, hopefully they aren't too huge.

Okay you may be better off getting another Qjet because of the electronics but give me the number off the side in pic # 1

I'll get the number and post it hopefully later today.

We will probably go with a Holley, Demon or one of those Summit carbs you recommended though. I don't think we will get another Q-Jet.

      JP,
      Got you post & PM.

That unit is a fully electronic E4M series and can not be easily converted to work without an ECM.

In short these units have no provisions for a well inside for a standard power piston & spring

If your not going to use another Qjet then Summit carb is a good deal.

Just got one here and I'm going to check it out to make sure they're a Holley copy.

      Jeff,
Thanks for the info. Too bad there isn't a market for that Q-Jet! Keep me posted as to what you think about that Summit carb. We will most likely not get anything until I hear what you think about it.
      Thanks again,
      Jason

After experiencing a Cliffs Quadrajet, I'll never try another set up...

His shop is right next to you in Ohio..

I went with a Sean Murphy Quadrajet, Cliff has a 6 month backlog.

I bought a stage 2, and it runs great.

Randy, can you post some info from Sean Murphy? There are a lot of excellent Quadrajet builders out there. Trouble is nobody knows how to get in touch with them..

Glad you kept the Quadrajet and are happy with the build.. I cringe when I see a cheap Edelbrock clone carb where a superior Quadrajet once was..

These guys were easy to get in touch with.
Sean answered the phone a couple of times, so it must be a small shop. They are on the west coast.
My carb shipped in about 8 days from order.
The carb looked absolutely brand new.
It came super well wrapped and had some extras that I did not expect. (Electric Choke, gaskets, good instructions, etc.)
