      Autobody law for 2011?

A friend of mine called me today and was telling me he had heard that there was some sorta law that was supposed to go into effect on Jan 1 2011 that would prohibit anyone to paint a car (weather it was yours or a customers) unless you were certified. From what I gathered it would basically do away with the "backyard body shop". From what he was telling me that if you paint your own car, you could be fined. Anyone know anything about this. I've searched the web, but can't find any info on it.

The fine probably would still be cheaper than the bill to have it painted.

Ha Ha agreed! But it would suck to know I couldn't paint my own car if I wanted to. Well not legally anyway.

I don't really see this as too big of a deal, unless you paint cars on the side for extra cash. It says in there that the average person can paint 2 cars a year, and be exempt from these requirements. The average person is lucky to redo and paint one car in a year.

67 LS1 Vert thanks for posting those links. I tried searching, but wasn't thinking to do a search for EPA It's good to know that we can still paint a couple cars a year. Like most other people, I probably wouldn't paint more than that a year anyway.

Smock67, I'm thinking like you, but was told that they (epa i guess) is encouraging body shops to turn in people that are running these so called "back yard body shops".

BTW, my buddy is supposed to be getting a dvd that was sent to the owner of the body shop he knows. It is supposed to explain everything in detail. I'll post more information once I find something out.

Don't sound too bad, that is until you realize this is just one step. What will be next? Banning of all paint sold to the average person, who knows? They just keep taking one step at a time, before you know it all your freedoms will be gone. One day the EPA may decide that no one needs to own more than one vehicle, you can only drive one at a time anyway, so why on earth should you own more than one will be their reasoning. One step at a time...

EPA always having to stick their heads in where they don't belong. People will always find away around something if they want to. I already have one way, I have a business account setup with Shermin Williams.

I am extremely peeved that they are trying to take away the ability for the average joe like me to be able to have a nice car with presentable paint. I certainly don't have the money to shell out even $3000 for a decent paint job. I have in my paint job including all materials tape and everything probably around 5 to 6 hundred dollars. Time wise way over 200 hours. If i had my car done at a shop it would have cost a f*ck ton which is far more then a sh*t ton.

Now my paint isn't perfect but considering the money and some of the horror stories I've heard with people and body shops I will gladly take a few blemishes in my paint. "They," will not stop the people who will paint their own cars because they found something they love and are able to do.

EPA be damned...Ok my rant is done.

Was it here that some guy made a big stink about the town because he was out spraying primer etc in his driveway. Thats the problem. I paint in my garage for myself. My exhaust goes through 8 filters before leaving. 8! I still worry that overspray may get by.

I think if you are a garage/home shop painter like myself, it might be a good idea to just do your thing and keep quiet and not brag or advertise on craigslist or the paper, etc... just a way for the EPA guys to track you. BUSTED!

If you actually read the links that were posted earlier, you will see that they aren't going to be driving around looking for people that aren't following this. They will find out by the records from the paint store, where you are buying your paint. They will need to keep track of all the paint sold to people and turn in that information.

Exactly. Which, if true, means that you'll need to jump through hoops to buy material if you paint more than 2 per year. It can be done, but it'll be a pita.

I wonder if this was written by the same jackass that said we will no longer be able to wash our cars in our driveway because the water runoff is damaging to the enviornment. The government should just put us all in orange jumpsuits and have us walk around in circles with shackles on. What's next? They need to change that line in the Star Spangled Banner to "the land of the free-domless and the home of the slave".

were already going thru this in WI, had to get everyone who paints certified and had to have proof that you have a booth and some other stuff. Paint has labels on it that says something like to be used or sold only to professionals so if they wanted to push it they could stop selling it to people off the street which I think they should so they would have to come and buy it from me for a huge inflated price so I could make some money in this ****ty buisness lol.
