      69 camaro 10 bolt 8.2

Ok with the pricing crazy on the 12 bolt Posi units. Has anyone updated their 10 bolt 8.2 with an Eaton posi unit?

If you have, how hard was it to put in and does it last? Also, what would be a good gear set to use. I Drive on the street all the time no track time planned.

Standard motor in my car (350) with a 4 sped, may someday upgrade it to a LS1 6 speed. BTW I have in the rear 235/35/18

      Thanks all

I have an Eaton posi in my El Camino for almost 3 years, street driven and autocrossed as well. Works great, smooth in corners, no signs of slipping or one wheel spins. Plus it is rebuildable so it should last a long time. I run a 3.36 gear but I have a Richmond 5 speed, I would check with others with 6-speeds for what they run. Unless it is going to be a while before you swap then the gearing choice may be different.

Wow...4.88's with a 4-speed? Is that a typo? You building an 1/8" mile car?

The 8.2" 10-bolt is definitely a step down from even the 8.5" 10-bolt in terms of ring gear strength, but given that you're only running a 235 rear tire and don't plan on beating on it that hard from the sounds of it, I'd think that you'd be fine. Ring gear size/strength aside, the Posi unit should function the same either way.

Thank you for the reply no not a 1/8 mile just a street hot rod and driver.
I was told that the 4.88 would be good, I guess not?

I would love to know what you guys feel would be a good gear setup? I know nothing about the gearing.

      Thanks,
      John

With the 4-speed, I would use either a 3.42 or 3.73, either which would still work with a T56. If you were going T56 sooner, maybe a 3.73 to 4.10 ratio.

      That'd be about 3900RPM at 60MPH...

Sounds like what the hot rodded Z28 302 boys would run on the street when I was growing up!. Heck I drove 4.56s and a Muncie for years on the street with a 29" tire. But then gas was 0.30/gal!

I have one in my 69... I want to put in a 12 bolt Moser, not because of the strength, although I do like that aspect, but because I want to get one with the torque arm mount... maybe a sale might be in the works?

Not sure what you currently have but we have torque arm kits for both the 10 and 12 bolt rears...No need to upgrade the rear just to get a torque arm kit, and if you do want to upgrade rears at a later time, you would only have to swap out the Torque arm mounting plate.

With your tire height, I would run a 3:73. We ran 4:10 gears (with a 6 speed) for a while in our project car (69 Camaro with basically the same height tires) but it makes 1st gear so short that it was practically unusable so we went to a 3:73 and it's much better all around.

while you have it apart you should upgrade your axles.. i was looking in jegs and you can buy their up graded axles for like $240! cheaper than a new 1/4 panel! 3.73.s are a good choice. im about do a t56 swap and will probably end up with a 373 or 411 setup.. i was told the 411s would really make 6th alot more usable.(depending how much torque your engine makes). what brake setup is that?

I have on order a new set of axles (Moser) $255 just waiting on the 4-link then I will pull the rear. funny the axle were really clean and with only 70k oem miles no blue marks or wear on them.

I bought the kit from Ebay ( I know I know Ebay I must say I'm really happy with the fit stainless emerg cables for $400 the calipers come from a 70's Cadillac Eldorado. I did change the pads to a better grade.

Unless you're running an EFI LSx engine, 3.73's will make 6th gear virtually useless with a 0.50 sixth gear T56. With a 26" tall tire, you'll be turning about 1,450 rpm at 60 mph and about 1,690 rpm at 70 mph; both of which are pretty low for a carbed engine.

I agree on upgrading the axles while you have it apart.

FWIW, I'm running an upgraded 8.2 (Eaton posi, Yukon 4.11's, Superior forged axles) in my driver '68 with 365 RWHP, a T56 and 275-40-18's on the back, don't baby it in the slightest and have about 30,000 miles on it with no issues.

the T56 will be down the road. I have a BP code rear now in the car which came with 373 in 69. No problems at all. However, once I go with the T56 I will have to change the grear after reading a bunch.
