You can download codecs to make media player play flv files, mp4 files, whatever. The hard part is finding out which codecs are good and legit and which are bad news or worse. I have no suggestions for you, I've just taken a swing over the years and sometimes they work and sometimes they cause me headaches. So far I've been pretty good with my antivirus setup that I've never had serious issues.
This will play damn near anything: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
For conversion software, total video converter is nice, but not free. It seems to be somewhat limited by the codecs you have available.
I'm still looking for something that will let me break down vids into clips.

For Windows 7 and vista, you can download realplayer from there
own site. Its free, plays flv and incorporates into explorer.
As for splitting movie files, download windows moviemaker
2.6. Convert the flv to wmv, load the video into
moviemaker and edit it.All free. The converter will also
change formats to make a dvd movie.
