Polyurethane clear OK over paint?

Painted the center console for the Cutlass with Rustoleum Hammer-Tone finish. I want clear it for protective purposes, but I don't want it to be too shiny.

I assumed I'd find clear satin enamel, but all they had was gloss or flat.

The guy at ACE said I can use satin finish polyurethane spray on it. I always thought polyurethane was for staining your deck... Can this be safely used over paint? He said yes.

I'd like to spray it tonight and install it tomorrow, otherwise I'd just test it all on something else.
