Chattering Clutch

Since it happens in 1st, is it only when he tries to get going, when slipping the clutch? Or is it happening while the clutch is engaged (foot off clutch pedal), while driving in 1st? If it happens while getting going, it could be a few things, like uneven surfaces, oil or other contaminants on the disc, uneven pressure plate spring pressure or some other linkage issue.
