      Chattering Clutch

So I'm trying to help out a good friend here.

The car is a 66 beetle and as the title goes, the clutch chatter's. Here is some of the details.

New clutch, 2 flywheels ( one resurfaced the other brand new. The later is currently installed.) New TO, pilot (gland nut in VW terms) and clutch fork.

This in my world seems simple. But after a long time working on it, nothing is coming to light here.

My thought was maybe the input shaft bearing, but the local tranny guy squashed that. Can something in the tranny actually cause this?

I dont see to many other angles here. The chatter seems only to be coming from first gear, as my friend tells me that if he makes it to second there's no issue.

The transmission mounts have also been replaced as they mount the engine as well. No change there...

So any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated here, thanks again!

Since it happens in 1st, is it only when he tries to get going, when slipping the clutch? Or is it happening while the clutch is engaged (foot off clutch pedal), while driving in 1st? If it happens while getting going, it could be a few things, like uneven surfaces, oil or other contaminants on the disc, uneven pressure plate spring pressure or some other linkage issue.

When mine chattered it was almost always the pressure plate or flywheel that had heat checks on it. Are there any greasy fingerprints on the disc? If so, maybe try patting some baby powder on it. That always worked on grease soaked brake shoes to keep them from grabbing so hard.

Issue is happening while trying to get going...

We gone thru two sets of clutches and two flywheels cleaning each one throughly. Is it possible to get faulty stuff twice in a row?

Did it chatter before putting the new disk in? Chatter will go away sometimes after a few miles are put on the clutch. I had the same problem when I put a mcleod disk in with a t56. Tech at mcleod told me to go find some stop and go traffic to help break it in. The chatter is 90% gone now

Still baffles the heck out of me. I've never seen a stock clutch assembly have issues with chattering (obviously other than ones that grease all over them). I've install a dozen or so clutches and never ever had one chatter from the get go.

The local tranny guy has given up answering questions, and of course he wants to have the car towed in to look at it, and the guy that sold him the all the parts wants nothing to do with it...wtf...?

no cars not lowered. We seem to have found a problem in the front tranny mount ( who would've thought) I'll update when we get it replaced

Check the clutch cable tube at the rear it should have bow (bend) to it. If not it would cause a chatter in first gear. Tabs that support the clutch cable tube in the tunnel will break (spot welds) and cause the chatter.
