Garmin spends a great deal of money to get those updates. Updating a Garmin map set without paying is software piracy. Just saying.

Maps and activation keys are tied to the internal unit ID. Unfortunately there's no legitimate way around purchasing updates from them.

I bought and downloaded the updates and it was well worth it. I now see much more detail (and the car icon is much cooler!).

Check places like www.retailmenot.com for legitimate discounts or special coupon codes that may be out there. At least then you get a deal without having to buy questionable pirated data. $70 is not too bad and probably fair.

I paid $110.00 or close to get life time updates. I feel it was worth the money. I think it's good for 3 a yr. for th life of GPS. Unless you do some bit torrent, pirate thing you prob won't find it.

What brand of GPS is that? If Garmin offers this service, I'm signing up.

Also, even if you do find the maps through other methods, they're extremely difficult to register and use with the hardware. The time it requires makes the price very reasonable.

I've been thinking about a GPS. Any certain brand/model better than another?

I love my Garmin 255WT... 4.3" wide screen, has live traffic which works decently.. not always but gives you an idea of whats going on.

Easy to use, I've got hundreds of waypoints/addresses saved on my GPS for work. You can easily categorize them into folders to keep things tidy and easy to find what you're looking for.

Being able to search for nearest Fuel, Food and other stuffs is helpful. Especially since I go way out into the boonies/wilderness for work I like to know how far I am from my nearest fueling point, and judge my range in the truck.

I also log my mileage with it, which is cool... but also points out I have a lot of windshield time. haha

Shows your top speed too... which is neat. Although mine reads 101mph right now, but I never did 101mph. I went through a tunnel/underpass and the GPS lost signal for a moment and glitched and thought I was really haulin the mail... I was cruise control doing 68. lol It's done that to me 2-3 times over the course of it's life...

I use a Garmin on my Goldwing. When traveling, it has tons of features but most importantly get where I want to go and back home.

x2, but I am a little biased. I have friends and family who work there, and the company is literally in my back yard
