largest brakes for 15 inch rims

      Hello everyone,

I have did many searches but I have only pieced together information on this subject. What is the largest rotor caliper you can put in a 15" rim? on the 15 or 17 rim post I read that 12.19 wilwood fits and also the 12" corvette fits. Can anyone confirm this? Personally I would like to go with the 11.75 corvette rotors but I would need to make a bracket to mount the caliper as I am using the 2nd gen platform. I just dont have any extra spindles as of yet to make up a bracket. I would like some concrete evidence as opinions seem to wildly differ on this subject so I would like to know if anyone has seen that this works/not works.

      Thank you
      Mark

Well, I KNOQ 12.19 fits cause we just shot a Mustang II with 15" steelies and those brakes..

Some of it would depend on the design of the wheel..

      12,19" rotors , 15" rims

      Hi!
      I have Wilwood 12,19"dia. x .81" rotors in the rear. (Ford 9")
Calipers are Wilwood 120-1052 Dynalite(They don´t sell them anymore)
      Replaced with 120-6806 Dynalite .(I think ?)
It´s tight , but it works ,with My American Racing Torque Thrust "D", 15x10.
I the front I have slightly smaller rotor dia.(10.75"x.81") with the same calipers,so that´s not a problem.
I intend to put 12.19" in the front in the future.(If possible)
So I hope that will work.

      Good Luck

If you're using the 2nd Gen suspension up front, you can grab a pair of spindles and calipers off a '91-'95 Caprice, then get a pair of '89-'92 1LE Camaro rotors and have 12" brakes on your car for under $300. The B-body spindles are the same height as the F & X-body. Plus, the cop cars and taxis used 15" steel wheels so you know the brakes will clear.

I'm using them on my Monte SS, and for factory-type parts, my car stops very well.

It is advisable to check the wheel clearance closely with 15” wheels. I considered the 12” upgrade, but have been told that the 12” upgrade will not fit under my stock 15” 5-spoke Z28 wheels due to the design of the drop center of that particular rim.

I am going to keep it simple until for now until I upgrade the entire suspension. I’ll be using high quality pads & shoes, s/s lines and slotted rotors recommended by Ltorres (Precision Brakes Company – sponsor).

I had 15" rally wheels with 2" drop spindles and the 1LE rotors and calipers on my Nova for a long time. They were close but fit fine.
After much research, consideration, and experimentation, I have decided that adulthood is not for me. Thank you for the opportunity.

I know a lot of the LS1 drag racers run 15in wheels. Most wheels require grinding on the caliper for clearance, but bogarts don't.

I bet the are aluminum wheels. Steelies seem to have larger drop centers.

Didn't you read my (or jakespeeds) post above? Certain 15" steelies WILL work. Cop cars came with 12" brakes and 15" wheels, and I know several guys that have the 12" rotors with stock chrome '83-'87 HO/442 15" Olds wheels, and stock '83-'85 Monte Carlo SS steel wheels, along with the '86-'88 aluminum wheels.

Bottom line, measure and find a set that'll fit over the 12" brakes; they're out there.

I thought maybe I was the only one able to see the post I put up there for a minute. I am just getting my subframe back from the strippers. As soon as the DSE setup is welded in I will be putting the front suspension back on with the 1LE brakes for now. Then I will be able to take a pick with the 15" ralleys in place to give you an idea of the room left. But I never had a problem.

Sorry I should have stated that I want the same size all the way around and I was responding to the LS1 brakes.

      Mark,

You want the same size brakes front and rear? That's not a good idea.

      Jakespeeds,
Why not on the same size rotors front/rear? I am interested to hear what your opinion is on why this is "not a good idea".

      Jakespeeds,
You should check out what we just put together for the SCCA ASedan class of cars.....just so happens I met a fella off this forum that has become a liason between PBC and the SCCA. If you go here I think you may find my 1LE kits pretty impressive in the 12.19" realm. They are for road racing complete with 12.19" 2 pce rotors, Staggered bore Billet Superlite 4's, Thermlock pistons and much, much more.

"Not a good idea" was the wrong way to put that. "No reason too" would be better. By the way is Nigel still around over there? He helped me out a lot when I was build my brake kit for my Supra.

I was the one that was all for the 1LE brakes. I am using them on my Nova right now. They work great. Although they are factory rotors and factory calipers.

No Nigel has moved on. Do you still have the Supra? We sell alot of those kits through www.horsepowerfreaks.com

IMO same size rotors are mostly aesthetic, we prefer setting up the rotors based on much more than diameters alone. Bias COG, pad compound, vehicles intended use, caliper selection, propvalve, step bore m.c's amongst other factors all play a vital role. Many find out the hard way, other's are already in the know, regardless one guys opinion of the identical system will vary as well.

Bummer. I know about your kit through HPF. The one I did was a couple of years before that deal. I made the adapters out of 7075 aluminum. I live real close to Wilwood and with there help found a hat that they already stocked that fit perfectly with no modifications. I matched it up with a Wilwood 13 in rotor and there piston radial mount calipers. Damn thing would stop on a dime.
