      converting to a EFI...

hello all; I am new to ProTouring and would like some feed back on how difficult and what are the things to consider when switching over to a computer controlled motor ie... ls1/ ls2, cobra motor etc...
I currently have a 70 1/2 camaro and a 68 cougar that i would like to convert but i would need an idea of how much work and headache i would be getting into; Considering that i have all the parts nessessary...My main concern is rewiring the computer and tuning... what are the ways that can make the swaps as trouble free as possible...?

Buy the harness and computer from someone like Speartech.
Buy the chassis harness from American Autowire after consulting with them about what harness fits your style of build.

Don't over look the fuel tank....it will need some way to keep the pick up tube for the electric pump submerged in fuel at all times.(ie baffels, sump...ect)
      1970 RS/SS350 139K on the clock:
89 TPI motor w/ 1pc rear seal coupled to a Viper T56 via Mcleod's modular bellhousing w/ hydraulic T/O bearing from the Viper, 12 bolt rear w/ 3.73 gearing, SC&C upper control arms, factory lowers with Delalums, C5 brakes at all four corners, Front Wheels 17x8's with Sumi 255/40/17 and Rear Wheels 17x9's with Sumi 275/40/17.

I will back this up as being very important or you can have really bad engine failure. Make sure you have a fuel pressure gauge and watch it like you would oil pressure to keep your engine out of trouble.

The fuel injection system is basically independent of the rest of the cars electrical system if you do it right. You want to make it that way so that you can change the system to something else easily later if you need to. If you put all of the wires for the relays and power in the same looms as the rest of the electrical it will be hard to diagnose things and change parts in the system if needed.

Goodluck with your decision on what company to go with. So far the new EZ EFI seems to make people happy.

Hey thats for all of your input and information, im begining to see the big picture... My next question is, If i have the computer and harness off the LS1 or Cobra motor, all i would have to do is get a wiring kit from American Auto Wire or EZ ?... seems too easy.... or do i send the exsisting harness to someone to get it calibrated?

you can either have the stock harness modified by some one (ussually the same person who does your harness can also reflash your computer) or you can buy the whole thing ready to go out of the box including the computer. I found that if you can get the harness and computer with the engine, it tends to be cheaper to have someone modify it then to buy a whole new set up. I had wait4me performance modify my ls2 harness and reflashed my computer, for less than half the price it would be to buy a new harness and computer. Either direction you go, it will be easy to install the harness back on the engine since everything will be labeled.

Honestly I like Megasquirt, you can get them ready built or in kit for and solder it up your self. Neat thing is if you build it or have it built is that for the most part it can be repaired without sending off to a foreign land for repair.
Honestly I have sold several people on these units and the newest one the MS III can do sequential, the MSIIextra has a can chip so you can actually use MS stuff to do tranny work also.
Another neat hing is that you have literally hundreds of people that can help trouble shoot.
The set ups can be made simple, fuel only, or fuel and spark.
After looking into every setup, the turn around time, extra costs etc and Megasquirt is my choice. my 77 Monza is going to have a 283 with LT1 intake, double humps, and lots of hand built parts i cant afford to buy.
I am even working on a bolt on DIS for V8s and intend to do way with my distributor.
Neat thing is if the computer completely blows up it only costs around $85 in parts not including the main CPU.
And if you build the jimstim tester you can hook it up and test for any hardware issues. its a test board that imitates the engine.
also this setup uses pretty much any sensor out on the market, heck you can have an IAC issue using the aftermarket jeep IAC, and swap out and switch to Ford style ISC, and other than a few configurations issues its basic.
Oh and you can use a small laptop/net book. There are also plans for a display called Megaview, and a couple of other items to monitor and adjust while in car.
http://www.ms3efi.com/index.html here is the latest and greatest, and digging around can get you linked to the MSEFI forums and links t oother setups like MS I and MS II and Microsquirt.
