67 Camaro - Dad and Son build

Well Ill give a bit of history on the car and will try to update as we go, have problems, questions ect. The car was a plane jane 1967 camaro that has been in my family since 1969. My grandfather worked for GM his whole life and in 1967 when the camaro came out a manager at where my grandfather worked got a 1967 camaro in butternutt yellow with a 327, powerglide and not to many options. Well in 1969 when the body was revised that manager wanted to get a 1969 camaro. So his 1967 was then put up for auction and my grandfather having 6 kids all around the driving age put a bid in of $200 for the car. Well as the story has it he won the car. My dad tells me stories of when my grandfather brought the car home and he wanted the car. The car was then passes along the girls (my aunts) up untill 1991 where it was then parked. My dad always told himself that one day he would have the car. Around 2000 me and my dad went and picked the car up from my aunts house. We picked at the car little by little not really knowing where to start. Up untill now.

I have been doing alot of research and I think/hope these are going to be the final plans for the car. I will be getting pictures up the next time I am at the car. We plan on holding off on the body as it pretty much needs everything at this point and we have decided for this summer to try to tackle the mechanical stuff and make the car a great driver first. Please if you have some opinions/comments share. Input is always a good thing. The goal for the car is going to basically be a great cruiser with a couple of dragstrip trips in store and mabye road/auto course later down the road. We want to be able to run at least mid-low 11's with the car. Around 550-600 wheel. With that in mind..here is the current list..and the current wish list for the car.

So the following has been order.:
Moser 12 bolt rear 3.73 gear 35 spline wavetrack diff.
Wilwood full brake set up. 6 piston up front and 4 piston in the rear 12.1 drilled/slotted rotors all around.
Ricks stainless steel tank set up for efi.

Big thanks to frank over at prodigy customs..next up is the t56 magnum and the lsx 454 soon after that...its going to be an awsome summer and I have been waiting and dreaming of doing this with me father for the last 10 years...

Heres an update from last week..we have takin apart almost the whole car and are waiting till next winter or summer to tackle the body. Its just to much money to put out at once...we basically need everything body wise so we decided to just get the car in perfect working order first and then worry about how it looks. With that being said the whole car is basically stripped and ready for some new parts. Here is where we are at now.

Ready for the pull, bye bye old 327 and powerglide...

      Out and conquered...haha

Also heres my other car that ive had since highschool thanks to my dads help...its my daily also..

      and having alittle fun

and another project I have going on..this will be my daily once its done..

and one of the car I finished (old dd) and sold for a ring for my fiancee

I guess you can say I like cars....the camaro was and always will be my first love though...

      Another young gun! Awesome.

Good luck with your project! It really helps to have family support...I couldn't have finished my Camaro without my dad's help. Not just for the wrenching time he put in, but also for the moral support.

We have a freskishly lot in common (Um, Camaro, Subaru, Name, Fiancee, Glasses, haha does FSE mean you're an engineer too?) so I'll be keeping tabs on this one...subscribed.

Yep.. The green can was my first mk2 to pull the old 16v out and put a vr6 into it.. I didn't have much cash into that car and sold it for quite a bit to buy a ring. Then decided that I really liked that car so I bought another mk2 and another vr6 to do it all again.. Haha.. Crazy I know. I currently live in Newtown pa.. I don't think that's to far from you..If your close enough and need a hand let me know..

Alright guys..need some help here...EFI or Carb? Heres the motor Im going with:

I have questions for both. I have done research on both and from what I have gathered EFI seems to be more expensive for this motor because I basically need everything..enlighten me please..

      EFI:
      All wiring
      ECU
      Tune
      All Accessories
      Injectors
      Intake Manifold
      Ignition Coils
      Throttle body
      Oil Pan
      Oil pump pick up
      Headers

      Carb:
      Carb (What size, Manufacturer?)
      Ignition (MSD 6010 or 19171130 off of www.crateenginedepot.com ?)
Intake Manifold (19244033 off of www.crateenginedepot.com or Edelbrock?)
All Accessories (Which kit will fit the stock subframe and go it with out any/too much modification?
      19243525 off of www.crateenginedepot.com
      19155066 off of www.crateenginedepot.com
      19155067 off of www.crateenginedepot.com
Oil Pan (19212593 off of www.crateenginedepot.com) fit stock subframe?
      Oil pump pick up
      Headers

Ive tried to see what others have done with this motor but because it is new not many have run it that I can find..I believe it is the same set up as a ls7 correct..? I dont want to just rule out EFI untill I know it is not suited for me. The car will be a nice cruiser with some drag strip trips in store. I feel like I might be leaning to carb set up because it seems to be easier and I just want to really weight both options fully. Help me guys. Thanks Steven

Save those engine stands off the original subframe. The reproduction pieces are junk and you are better off cleaning up the orginal ones and having them powder coated. Other than that I think your original subframe was totally shoot.

You also might consider the Hotchkis valved Bilstein shocks in lieu of the QA1 pieces since it looks like you are going with their springs. Nothing against QA1 but might save you some money and have a better matched system. Do some research on the forum and you will find they get good reviews.

Also, I vote EFI. I know the LSX 454 is an awesome piece but you could also save some money on a drop out LS2 or LS3. You could get the accessories, trans, wiring, ECM, etc. and save some serious money over the LSX 454. You can do a cam and spring swap and easily be in the 500+ HP range at the crank. The LS3 heads flow better and would give you slightly better numbers than the LS2. I know that is short of your goal of 550 RWHP but I estimate it would be around half the cost or less of the set up you are looking at. Just some food for thought.

Last piece of unsolicited advice. If you are serious about running 11s in the 1/4 mile you should reconsider the leaf spring rear suspension. If your budget can manage the cost you would be much better off for hard launches with a canted 4-link like the prodigy bar or g-bar. It will also give you improved ride quality on the street.

Best of luck with the build.

      (1) I have already bought the QA1 all around.. im afraid its to late to turn back now. I plan on running them and if me and my dad really hate them well look into other options. But thanks for the advise.

      (2) The problem here is that we want a motor with a warrenty. Thats why we want to buy a new gmpp engine. I will have to look into the ls2-ls3. What cam and spring set up would you recommend for the power outputs I would like to see? Where can I look to buy a complete set up..? Ive been talking to frank over at prodigy and he has been telling my about a really nice 418cc engine that will make close to the same hp/tq as the gmpp 454..well see.

      (3) I have looked into it with frank..it just isnt in the budget as of right now. Again mabye down the road we will go with that. Only time will tell. Thank you for taking the time to give me your advise. It is appreciated. Thanks Steven

No problem with the QA1. I was just throwing out another option. I don't think you will hate them.

I can definately understand you wanting a warranty. After all, you plan to spend a lot of money on that engine and you expect it to work. For a new LS I think you are on the right track with Frank. Another resource for new performance LS engines is Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center. They are a sponsor here as well - user name Jesse@SDPC

A set of Cal-Tracs are budget friendly and will help you at the drag strip to get better launches. You might even be able to pick up a used set from someone by posting on the wanted section.

It is good to see you have a plan by the way.

I am not totally set on the lsx just yet. It does seem pricey for the power it makes. Expecially when you factor in how much extras will be needed for the install. The should sell it as a complete drop in for that price. Im still weighing out my options at this time. Hopefully by the time comes to order the motor we will have all our bearings sorted out. With the help of you guys and frank im sure im in good hands. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I looked into these because of you and this seems like a great alternative to the pricey 3 link set up. I know that the 3 link set up is far superior but this product seems to fit the car well at this time. I will be on the lookout for a set of these. Thanks for the the info.

Thank you, its alot of work to build a car right the first time. We are trying to put something together that will hit all the targets we want in the budget we want. I hope were on the right path. Again thank you for all the help.
