Racing Sunglasses

Usually my glasses are the best $20 can buy (LOL)! For the track I want to get something decent. I'm thinking a brown tint driving lens (so even if it gets overcast can still see well) that wraps around for full converage.

Anyone have recommendations on
1) What to get and
2) Where to buy?

I'd rather buy them at a store than online, so I can check them out first.

I got prescription glasses specifically for driving and track/autocross events. I have one "distance" eye and one "close-up" eye so can't drive well without some sort of correction. The prescription helps even my sight out and gets the depth perception back. Kinda sucks but oh well ... (this reminds me to find the glasses as I haven't had them for the past several car events).

If you've got good eyesight, check out a sporting goods or golf-specific store. They sell eyeware that cut down or eliminate glare and that's what you want for driving glasses.

Make sure you get a polarized lens, they kill the glare off the road & dash, and they make blue skies prettier!

I like my Maui Jim sunglasses. They have the best anti glare and polarized lenses. You get what you pay for. I used to buy $20 sun glasses till I got a pair of Maui Jims' for my birthday. The optics are awesome. I will never buy a cheap pair of sun glasses again.

Optic Nerve sunglasses. We sold them at my bicycle store. Come with diferent lenses. Cut glare well on track using the yellow lenses and don't cost too much.

Maybe it's just me, but I would never wear any type of glasses behind a full face helmet unless I absolutely had to. You've got cars coming at you that you can only see in your peripheral vision and I wouldn't want frames blocking that area of vision.

Maui Jim and Oakley are my two preferred brands. With proper frame selection and design peripheral vision isn't obstructed. More important than anything is fit of course, I wouldn't chance ordering sunglasses online unless I've already tried out a particular model locally and liked it. Big fan of "rose" tints, they're really more of a ruddy brown color, they leave colors looking true but with a warmer saturation and high contrast. Traffic lights really "pop" with a rose tint. Maui Jim has their Maui rose lenses, and Oakley's closest equivalent is VR28. Even though they both block out alot of light (9% transmittance), I haven't had any issues until it's almost nighttime. I'll leave polarized or not to personal preference, if you go maui jim you can't get them without it, it's optional on most Oakleys. I almost consider it a must for my sunglasses as glare reflected off of other cars really bothers me, but they can also cause some road surfaces to not reflect light the way you're used to, wet surfaces may appear dry with polarized lenses as they can eliminate the reflection from the water.

Edit: Almost forgot to add. Anti-glare coatings. Big fan of them, at least on the back of the lens. It's one of the reasons I really like maui jims, all of their sunglasses have it and it makes a big difference in clarity when you're facing into bright light, especially near sunrise and sunset. Only a few Oakleys have it and I consider it oakleys biggest weakness. There are some other brands too that have them but I wasn't really attracted to their lineups, all a matter of personal preference.

IMO, Oakley Gas Cans are the only way to roll. You can order them with the lens type and frame finish of your choice. They come polarized as well. I thought I might like something with smaller arms and they make them in a smaller size with less bulk on the side but the big ones match my fat head better. X2! I have the Maui Jim Ka'anapali with the neutral grey lenses. They're by far the best sun glasses I've ever had. Incredibly clear optics, so comfortable it's like they're not even there, even with a race-spec helmet on. Try that with $20.00 shades. Heck, try it with $120.00 shades. I even spent the extra $$ to get them in my prescription. Yup, close to $500.00, but worth every penny in my book.

Go to Walmart and find a pair of frames you like. Have a set of PZ aka:Polarized lenses in your choice of Brown, Gray, Green, what ever you like. I have heard brown is a favorite of drivers I have gray with an additional tint added. This is an option that is a cheap alternative to some of the big name lenses. To make sure you are getting REAL PZ lenses and not fancy coating you can test them. A real PZ filter will cancel light transmission if turned 90 degrees to another PZ lens.
