      Swapping speedo gear??

Anyone know what is involved in swapping out the colored plastic speedo gear in a TH400? My speedo is reading about 10mph high for my 3.31 rear gear and 18" rims.

First, you'll need to pick the right speedo gear. Figure out the ratio of how much higher (or lower) your speedo is reading. What gears did you previously have? What tire size was originally meant to be on your car and what do you have now?

The trans was swapped out at some point and replaced with an early 70's unit from a caprice/impala. I have no idea what is in there now. I have no idea what tooth count would be correct. Stock were original steel 14" wheels with 3.31 rear gear (still original). Only thing ever changed was the TH400 itself.

They are sold by color. Check whaty you have now and reference the index for the right color.

Do you still believe in all the things that you stood by before? Are you out there on the front lines, or at home keeping score?

But how do I get the current gear out?

One bolt holds the retainer in place. It usually requires loosening the bolt, sliding the retainer back (the hole is slotted) and pulling the unit out. Really easy. One suggestion is to jack the rear of the car up rather than the front so as to not push fluid out the opening. If it is angled nose down there shjouldn't be more than a few drops of fluid spilled, have a rag handy either way.

This might be a little late but here's a link that is helpful in calibrating your speedo
