      Need input on carb adjustment

Hey guys I sent my eldelbrock q-jet to cliff's for a rebuild. My car is a 71 cutlass with a stock 350.

First what would the factory air/fuel mix screws setting be?

And it was running fine under load when I put it on except at idle it smelled rich and had a rough idle, then I started screwing with the mixture screws now it smells rich idles even worse and throttle response is not as crisp.

Right now I'm set at 4 turns out from the bottom, anybody have a suggestions and where I should be set at? Cliff said this carb is a 1910 and was way to big so he lowered the jetting and set it at 3 turns out.

I am not familiar with Edelbrock carb,s, but the first thing I would do is check the float level. Once your sure that is correct I would start playing with the air bleed screws and get it to idle decently. Once it was idleing descent I would check the timing. Once the timing is dialed stay with the carb until you have corrected the problem.

Keep an eye on the fuel pressure...those needles and seats don't like much above 5.5-6psi and they just won't hold the fuel back while idleing.

4 turns will make it pig rich at idle unless your idle feed restrictors are way to small. Start with 2 turns and go from there. You can use a vaccum gauge or rpm to tune for the cleanest idle. The highest vaccum and or rpm nets you the cleanest idle. Then you can fatten it a hair from there to get your drivability.
