I'm sure your surprised but I vote 8.5, these are great rears and with just a little upgrading can handle a TON of power. Just going to aftermarket 30 splines and a trutrac is good for any amount of HP in road racing, hell it's good for 10's with slicks at the track... Weld the tubes and add the billet cover and you can go 9's, just look at the GN's doing it.

All you're gaining with the 9" is more weight and less efficiency for more $$. The only reason you don't see a ton of 8.5's out there is it's just a really uncommon axle.

      X2 I agree!

We have MANY customers with Turbocharged GN's deep into the 10's and into the 9's with a Sh*t load of torque running a built 8.5 rear end. Doug just doing what your planning on will handle 700 rwhp easily at the drag strip leaving off a trans brake but I don't think that's your plan so I think your 8.5 set up will handle even more hp on a auto-X. Save weight, save money and go with the 8.5 Hell I am pushing 500 hp with my turbocharged T-Type with a Stock 8.5, stock axles, stock posi chunk and still holding up fine after 5 years and a lot of 20 lbs boost beatings on the Auto-X & Dragstrip.... I am not changing anything until it breaks and once it does I will be doing Exactly what you planed on without a single worry!

I'm definitely not an expert on rearends (no jabs needed), but I would vote 8.5 for the same reasons. We had planned to run one in Sam's 67 that we're building but found a 12 bolt first. My second choice would be a 12 bolt before a nine inch. We have been running a 12 bolt in our 66 for three years with Moser C-clip axles, Eaton posi and Richmond gear with absolutely no issues. We taking it out right now to replace the axle bearings just for good measure and to add a -8 AN bung for a better vent.
      Just my humble opinion...

How much work does the 8.5 need before you can run it? Can you just throw it in and focus on getting a proper transmission in that car?

Perhaps don't overlook the Ford 8.8" axle. It's what the 2013 GT500 drives through in slightly strengthened form, at 650-ish HP and 600-ish torque.

Obviously it's still in active production.

There is or at least was an effort to adapt the 8.8 to the Malibu/MCSS chassis discussed a while back over at maliburacing.

The 8.5 is just a stock one that was sitting outside for a good while so it is pretty much just a rusty housing.

Plans are to bring it into the shop...dissassemble...clean...weld tubes...weld on the big ford axle ends...have someone build it with the 30 spline axles and tru-trac...3.73 gears...and a 1350 yolk (is 1350 right?)...then install the Baer SS4 brakes.

Yeah, that rearend statement was a slow pitch!

The small plastic vent on the stock 12 bolt housing doesn't seem to work too well during extreme use so we plan to tap and plug it and then weld in this bung on the top of the axle tube and run it up to a vent mounted higher. I didn't come up with this on my own, I have seen a bunch of guys that do what we do doing the same.

      Thanks for the pic Tom!!!

The car hasn't been touched in quite a while. I recently re injured my back so I have been focusing on getting that back to normal so I can even drive the car!!! All this down time has really made me think of some simple thing I need to take car of on the car.

      1) Move the battery to the trunk
      2) I need a diagonal bar behind the drivers seat per SCCA regulations for the hill climb.
      3) I think I need a new dimmer switch b/c my high beams work and my low beams don't. This blew when my newly built alternator was pulsing between 8 volt to 18 volts.
      4) I think I also have a connection with a buddy of mine to get the car painted! It will still be satin black don't you worry but it will be actually painted instead of rattle canned. I'm afraid it might loose some of its appeal though...
      5) Use the really nice glove box ignition box mount I got from GNS Performance.
      6) Gauges...but those are expensive so probably won't happen any time soon.
      7) Move my trans cooler to the spot where Scot and Dan have thiers...I like that spot WAY better! Thanks guys!!!
      8) Last but not least...possibly pull the motor and freshen it up with new bearings and rings. I was talking to Bob Johnson on FB and he really made me think about running the motor the way it is and crashing it when the motor blows and oils down the track. When the motor is out I would install a Canton RR oil pan as well.

      Any of you got ideas?

Let your back heal. I have way to much experience in my family with back issues. Time is your best friend and don"t over do it because "today" it feels OK.

It's funny how the little things get pushed aside. I had a list of 11 cleanup areas, mostly wiring, on the Monte the would take just a little time, 2.5 weeks later they where done.

Spring is coming, hope to see you at another event soon.

oh yeah TRUST ME...I am taking it easy even when it does feel better. I am well versed in back pain...

I had back surgury (laminectomy) when I was 19 to correct my L5S1 disc that totally blew out and that started the whole pain issue. When they were in there they found out that I had congenital spinal stenosis. That basically means that my lumbar spinal column is tapered instead of a constant diameter...therefore pinching and crowding nerves whenever there is any amount of inflamation. This causes pain literally in my a s s and down my leg. Any kind of movement is not fun when it flames up and I even have to walk with a cane. Kinda sad.

Things were good from 1999 (date of surgury) until about 2007. That's when the pain started to come back. Since then I had had 9 epidural steroid shots, Physical Therapy almost every week, and have had to stop doing things that I love doing b/c they are too much impact on my body. I used to be awesome at snowboarding..no more of that. No more boat rides on the bay with my buddy's...etc. It's weird that racing my car doesn't affect me at all! I guess it is the fact that I am strapped in the seat so tight that I don't move around. Good thing I guess.

Yes spring is approaching fast. With all the events being so far away I am afraid that I will only be able to compete at RTTH. Last year Kim and I really went all out and hit every event we could and while it was an absolute blast...it killed me money wise and car wear wise. After blowing the trans and possibly the motor...I need to pick and choose events wiesly! I will still do a bunch of local events though and will never miss that hill climb again, but I just can't justify the expense to travel 8+ hours,or even farther, for an event. The only exeptions there are RTTH which I will never miss, and the OUSCI if for some un Godly reason I get invited, but im fairly certain that I don't have to worry about that! lol

with the current status of my physical therapy and back rehab...it's looking like the Polish Mountain Hill Climb and RTTH will be my only events this year.

      Sad but True.

So I need to get a few loose ends tied up for this upcoming CDC/SCCA/ASCS season. This is the first one....

My Bear Prop Valve is leaking at the highlighted connection. I took it to Facebook and was contacted by Gabi Baer with in about two minutes...then on the phone with Bear in about another two minutes. When I called Rick picked up the phone and new exactly who I was and what my issue was. He even said "are you Doug with the red arrow in the picture". Now that is customer service!! Got the info that I needed (pipe thread = teflon tape) and all is well over here!!

Well today was a good day....a great day!!!

I had my last doctors visit today concerning my back and it turns out that I am no longer a candidate for back surgery!! The pain and symptoms could come back at any time but the surgery needed is just too major at this time that we are going to try to mamage my current situation. Good news in my book. So I need to get my life and body back in shape. And once that happends about mid summer...I should be ready to get back into my Monte.....

I have my sights set on RTTH.....watch out.
