HOW TO PAINT SILVER ..need pro advice

Ok , im not new to paint work but i hate painting SILVER CARS ( not your basic everyday type, but nice stuff)

situation. Im doing a CORTEZ SILVER 69 CAMARO and i dont want any variations or paint lips...

I would like to panel paint it but worried about everything matching up ...and ADVISE from Knowlegable painters.

Im using a DIGITAL SATA and had good luck matching metalics but concerned about SILVER.

I WANT TO PAINT THE MAIN BODY with DOORS N DECK LID HUNG LIKE FACTORY and the paint the front end seperately...
I dont have a place big enough to set the front up at the same time and that concerns me as far as panel painting and matching.

Should i Bolt the body together and base it all at ones and the blow it apart and clear seperately , or should i Jamb it in n back tape and paint the whole car at once. ?
I have had good luck with appeture tape but i dont want any lines on this car...
ITS BEEN A FULL NUT N BOLT ROTISSERIE AND I HAVE A TON OF WORK INTO IT and i dont want issues at this stage..

ANY ADVISE WOULD BE NICE... THANKS GUYS...

      ANY HELP FRANK ?

If you're bc/cc, I jamb everything seperately in base, assemble it, base then clear everything. I never panel paint metallics as simple spray pattern differences can cause different "tinting".

      before anyone tells me , i know i cant spell...ITS PAINT .

I bought this car in November 09 and i need to have it done for the GRAND ROD RUN in PF on APRIL 13-18th , .
I have done every bit of this car so i know every nut n bold ...Its a 67 K mile , Cortez silver V-8 Stick car and im building a nice COPO tribute.

VERY CLEAN SOLID CAR , all original floors , trunk so on...
Heres the car when i got it.

      I have a 69 BB Solid lift cam eng , a 69 Camaro M-20 and a late 68 12 bolt rear...Everything is new or ORIGINAL refurbished..
I blasted almost all the original bolts and they are in GREAT SHAPE with the markings on the heads..
I found some articles that FRANK had written Years back that show original PAINT INSPECTION MARKS and i went to look at a friends COPO that got a 997 out of a 1000 pnts at a show in CHICAGO ( GOLD CLASS ) so i know things are very close to correct.

I went witha heat delete set up , added a somg pump set up and hope to be finished by april...

The car will be for sale.
I took pictures of all original paint markings to replace as factory and have pics of all work from start to finish...

THANKS RICK , THATS A NEW APPROCH IDEA FOR ME...

I dont mind panel painting , even metalics , I DID THIS CONVERT last year and it was a code 25 Astro blue , a light silverish blue and maybe i was lucky but not one color variation,...

      SILVER JUST MAKES ME NERVOUS...LOL

I've done them both ways and it's just better to spray everything assembled. Jon Kosmoski of House of Kolor fame will tell you to "walk the car" meaning when you make a pass with the gun, spray from the front of the car to the back in one pass. He does this to keep his candies/mettalics uniform. Hope that makes sense.(I learned that from video years ago) It's good advice, but by the time you put one coat on a side your winded.

I have been panel painting like that for years without problems. Not on candies though. But then again, I am a painter. The digital SATA will be very important. Watch your air pressure, use the same temp. reducers and the same amount of coats. Also make sure the front fenders are positioned as they would be on the car, not laying down. The metalics will change and play with the color.

If it was me, I would do it. Just take a deep breath amd spray. Remember, it's just paint, not rocket science!! Don't over stress it.

Thanks Hot rod ...my problem is , I DONT HAVE A BOOTH or access to one at this time so its hard to control the environment in a garage ! but thats where i always paint ...
THE OTHER PROBLEM I WORRY ABOUT , ITS INDIANA...Freaking weather here is never the same 2 days in a row... WELL , COLD IS COLD but still .
I'll get it done , was just looking for some other good advise and methods of how others have done it ...
Figured i can always lean a new method thats better..
ANY OTHER COLOR WOULDNT CONCERN ME...BUT I HATE SILVER...LOL
If it weren't a Factory code 69 Cortez silver car , it would be black or hugger orange...But going for keeping it correct ..gotta go silver.

      Thanks again guys ..
BTW , NICE CAMARO RICK .Killer stance !

When are you painting the car? Keep us updated!

Having a spray booth is key. I do a fair amount of side work from my garage. Mostly hot rods, customs etc.. I don't paint in the garage though. I will jamb something small, but no full panel painting. I have a shop a couple miles from me that will let me use their booth on the weekends. I would rather trailer or drive the car over all sanded and ready to spray. Tape it up and go. I have found it to be faster to go there, mask it, paint it, bake it and trailer it home in less time than it would take to spray it at home. No air flow in a garage really slows down the process.

      Good Luck to you.

      Thanks Glenn ...
Really wanted to get the paint done by next weekend , still have a LARGE amount of work n detail to do...
a full nut n bolt rotisserie resto starting last week in NOV 09 till april 2010 and doing it all alone...thats everything .. tear down , assemly , body n paint , interior , all suspension , glass , cut n buff , wiring , and all the little details that goes along with it.

Ive painted ina garage for years and dont have any issues with that.
I've worked for shops , and done it here ..you can get the same results in either situation...PREP , clean clean clean , plenty of light and AIR.

i usually wetsand to 3000 and buff...

THE CAR IS TAPED UP AND IM SPRAYING JAMBS IN A LITTLE BIT...
I'll try to post some photos later.

      THANKS AGAIN..

i figured , DONT WORY ABOUT IT SO MUCH AND JUST GET AFTER IT LIKE ITS ANY OTHER PAINT JOB.

      WELL , ITS PAINTED...

THANKS FOR THE INPUT GUYS ...I actually put it all to use and am THRILLED with the end result...slower reducer , painting all the way down the side at once rather than paneling , and put it together and spent hours taping it off...IM BEAT , BUT IN A GOOD WAY.

Now to take it all apart again , a little wetsanding..OK , A LOT , all the way to 3000 grit and buf and its MONEY IN THE BANK !

Heres the car in color after a 16hr day/ yesterday .

      Thanks Glenn...

im real happy with the outcome.
I think i just make myself stress sometimes for no reason...LOL

I used a pair a Sata digital guns...
I Always use Diamont paint ..I never use cheaper paint...NEVER.

I use metal etch primer on the bare metal , then use a 2K urethane high build primer ...Black guide coat and block till i think its straight and then wetsand with 400 to get flat and then again with 600 to smooth out before i spray.

The silver covered so nice but i did have to put 4 coats on for complete coverage....No sand scrathes , no blemmishes , no modeling or tiger stripes...( THANK GOD ) slow , steady and patient , paid off....

The clear i used is a lower line clear but i really like it and have never had any issues with it.
Its called TRANS STAR , ...
Really cost effective if on a budget and i really like spraying it ... It also wetsand and buffs out really well !

I put 4 coats of clear on knowing that i will be blocking and wetsanding from 1500-3000 before buffing...maybe a little over kill but i like the outcome and it makes buffing easier.

Painting in the garage , i did get some dust in the clear but very minimal and will come out with no problems.

AGAIN , THANKS FOR THE TIPS ...

If you really want to get nuts, wait 5days, wet sand it with 600 to take the peel out and clear it again. It'll be like glass.
