New AMC guy

[AMC Racer]

New guy from Ontario, Canada. Noticed a few AMCs on here, so adding another. My user name is AMC Racer, but just getting started so more of a wanna-be-racer than a real one, but good to have plans. Hoping to update my car with better brakes, tires, suspension, gearbox, etc. to get all-around performance and this forum seems like a good place for ideas.

Like most guys, started with engine upgrades first, now need to get the drivetrain and chassis up to par. Here's a small picture of my '74 Javelin AMX from a couple years ago. Currently has a 401 with Indy heads, small street roller cam, mild suspension upgrades, etc.



Hope I can learn lots and help others if I can.

nice Javelin, i got a friend with a 74 SST and hes swaping a 06 Viper chassis and running gear in it cus finding aftermarket parts is very hard to find, but thay are out there.

That yellow '73 and yellow Spirit are a couple cool AMCs! Tons of nice cars on here from all makes with lots of ingenuity. Hope mine can be as nice someday.

I like the look that you have right now! It sort of has that Trans-Am feel to it, which is what I am going for my build. It looks stout and aggresive. May I ask what your wheel/tire/size combo is and also what suspension upgrades you did? Thanks!

Nice to see another Javelin! Mine has 15"x10"x5"bs rear, 15"x8"x4"bs front "D"-slot stock car wheels modified to mount stock AMC centre caps. The tires are old Firestone Firehawk 295x50 rear and 235x60 front, so just a basic tire ... but what I could afford at the time. Fitted a 1 1/16" front bar and 3/4" rear bar, KYB shocks, urethane bushings, AGR 12:1 box and pump. The side-exit pipes were cool and sounded nasty, but exhaust would come into the cabin with windows down, so now has 3" X-pipe and 3" tailpipes (modified Mustang kit). The rear spoiler and cowl hood are stock, with custom front chin spoiler. Otherwise, more or less stock.

Was there something specifc you did to achieve your lowering with the KYB shocks? I know you can get a full coilover kit for the fronts now, I am just wondering what to do for the rear. I am trying to keep mine "low-dollar".

It hasn't been lowered yet ... just 35 yr. old springs and the wider tires fill up the wheel wells . To lower the rear, just use lowering blocks between spring and axle. Check the AMC forums for info. on lowering plates for front spindles (offset holes for the bolt-on AMC spindle). The lowering plates are "low-dollar" compared to the coil over kit. The KYB shocks are same as Mustang front and Camaro rear. I think some guys have changed the front coil lower seat to one from an early Mustang so they can use common Mustang springs. Not much readily available for AMC, so need to be resourceful. Hope this helps.

Another question - and anyone here who has an answer cen let me know - from what I gathered from some other forums specifically an article I read from a "spring specialist" at Eaton Springs is that you want to stay away from blocks for the sake "axle wind-up and poor vehicle handling" Any thoughts??

... not many "low-buck" options ... maybe de-arched springs instead of lowering blocks ... but new springs to suit your desired ride height would be a better choice but more $$. I've not lowered mine yet 'cause too easy to crunch the headers. If you want high-tech, high-dollar, Control Freak Suspensions has just prototyped tubular front and 4-link rear suspension for '70 AMX. Front parts will fit your Javelin. Rear for later Javelin may need some changes. It's getting easier all the time to build an AMC ... if you have the cash. Hope this helps.
