Sounds like you have it sort of figured out.
Generally $2600.00 for paint alone is dirt cheap. That price included body work... very cheap price no matter how you look at it. Paint and material "costs" alone can be more then that.
He is going to fix it? My only tip is get it to him ASAP while his offer to take care of it is still fresh in his mind. I assume he has a home based type paint shop?
