Looking for some tips for my situation...

I just got my mustang back from the paint shop after three months of it being there and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. I got her last night and in the garage light I saw a lot of stuff I didn't like. To start off, I took it to a guy who I've seen his work at different meets and worked out a deal with him. Basically, he was to fix the bodywork, jam the car, lay out a base coat in the stock yellow, clear, and do a few detailed pieces in black for $2600. Shop was an hour away from me so I got to it a few times before the major stuff was done and didn't see much except for a few phone pics and then when I got it last night. Well, really fast I noticed, dirt in the paint (which a really good cut and buff could take care of), the jams weren't done for the doors or trunk, the bumpers don't look like they were removed as I was told to be painted, had some overspray on the paint from spraying black in the wheel wells, and you could see waves in the paint and little dimples from areas not really taken care of before paint. The hard part seemed alright which was fixing the bodywork but overall for what I talked about with him and what I was told and basically how I expected the car to turn out was not very close to what I expected. Now I talked to the guy this morning when he hit me up to see if the car got there alright and I let him know my concerns. He apologized for the problems and asked me to get the car back together (I had basically striped it for him to save some money) so that it is drivable and he would come up and pick it up and fix the issues or I would drop it off and then he would take care of it. I am willing to let him correct his work since he said he would do it and am going to start getting it ready tonight for him. Just wanted to know what your opinions were. Sorry for the long read.

Sounds like you have it sort of figured out.

Generally $2600.00 for paint alone is dirt cheap. That price included body work... very cheap price no matter how you look at it. Paint and material "costs" alone can be more then that.
He is going to fix it? My only tip is get it to him ASAP while his offer to take care of it is still fresh in his mind. I assume he has a home based type paint shop?

      Good luck with it.

I understand where you are all coming from and I can agree with you that you pay for what you get but I could have gotten a Maaco type job for half the price and still got what I got. Forgetting the jams , the taillights, and getting overspray of black on yellow is like duh!?! I was going for better then OEM and she didn't even come out OEM like. I would have loved to spend a lot of money on the paint job but unfortunately I couldn't and I had to sacrifice things just to get it done but I won't expect less then what I was told I was paying for you know?

Unless it's black or red... you must be buying that in 50 gallon drums these days

$2600 is about half of cost of decent respray.

If the guy is willing to fix the problems, make sure you make it clear to him what you expect and get it done asap.

I found it takes twice as much yellow to cover unless you start with a white base and then it still takes more than normal amounts but it will be brighter with less.

      How about some pics?

      $2600?

That would probably have covered bodywork and paint for my trunk lid.

That's ridiculously cheap. If you're even remotely OK with it and can fix it, consider yourself extremely lucky and play 2600 at the lottery. "Better than OEM" is WAY more than $2600 for labor and materials. And I mean WAY more.

Since it is a solid color it is a lot easier than a metallic for sure. It is a really cheap price, I guess it all depends on the human factor. I could do it for maybe $3500 and it would be ready to show. I have low overhead and high standards. I still don't understand how materials can be $2600 ?????

Cheap materials is one thing.. but there's no excuse for poor craftsmanship, no matter how much was paid.

Currently my car is in "body work jail/hell" I dropped the car off close to a year ago and it should be ready on the 15th of March. Just the body work portion of my bill has exceeded $3500 and we haven't even gotten quotes on the paint.
