Depending on the fumes it is a neccessity to remove them as it may be impossible to get them out before the damage can be done to your lungs. HEPA filters are great at removing dust and smoke but some of the carcinegins are vapors that will not get cuaght. HEPA filters also can clog rather quickly for the expense and that is why hazmat work is very expensive. The asbestos crews I have seen working can go thru them at a rate that would make your heating bill seem mild.

Get the stuff out and be done with it. The thing that really gets tough is when you are trying to supply a paint booth with fresh and warm enough air all at the same time, which can make painting in the winter in some areas a lot more expensive because of the heating of the incoming air to the building.

If you are welding and you choose to use welding rod you need to remove those fumes absolutely as they can cause real motor function problems of the body from the reseach I have read that can be worse than alsheimers disease. The choice of using a mig can really help and a tig is a good choice to to keep the smoke and fumes down but any welding fumes in mass quantities should be removed.

If you really want to get the best info you can go to OSHA.gov and see what the requirements are in the industry and then decide from there.

May The Horsepower Be With You !!!
