      New t-stat no work

So I have had a 160 stat in my car for years with no issues. Decided it was a good idea to run a hotter one now that it's a daily driver. Bought one of the "high performance" Mr. G 180 t-stats and now the car will only get up to about 130-140 (verified with prob thermometer in rad). Could I have installed it backwards? The spring goes in the manifold correct? If it is a bad part, do yall recommend a 180 or hotter?

Weird-sounds as though it's stuck open. Mr G means it's made in Mexico=cheap labor which translates to lack of quality control. I'd try putting a new one in.

I put a 195 stock rep one in and it work great. Weird thing though is it will hold real well then dip down to about 160-170 then back up.

well, sounds as if you have an ultra efficient cooling system in terms of your radiator and shroud.

I have had some issues with the Mr. G high flow stat as well. Only mine was stuck just barely open and would slowly run hot after a while. Put in another and it is fine (at least last year it was!!)

Oh yeah, years ago I had one stuck open too!! Would like another Robershaw style stat that is quality. The Mr. G ones are not that inexpensive. But the $3 parts store ones seem to be just as reliable.

You should make sure your gauge is accurate.

I have always run factory t-stats and have drilled 2 holes in them to let any steam holes pass through. A 180 is good for a driver.

Never had any problems with the Mr G stats, or Robert Shaw, or the factory GM stuff(although I usually drill two 1/8" dia. steam holes in every one I install to help burp the system.)
