      ever seen this??? vintage caddy

Well I picked up 63 caddy coupe deville with a 390. Car has been sitting for a few years. We did get it started but it snapped the water pump belt. WP was frozen. Got it home and took it apart and found this..

I have purchased a few cars in the pass that had been sitting for awhile but I have never seen anything like this, It like a wax paste. I had to take a screw driver and push it thru , I flushed the block with the hose till clear water came out, no other wax stuff?? Is it just old coolant?

The coolant jelled. Dang, that's a mess.

You may want to try and see how to responds to heat ie does it harden and burn or melt and flow. Hopefully it'll become liquid in which case I would recommend you go over the outside of the block and get it nice and warm to ensure this stuff is out as best as possible. Last thing you want is a partial blockage on one section that's not discovered until there's damage.

Its silicates from older coolant, mixed with aluminum corrosion, cast corrosion and may be some sort of radiator sealer or block sealer.
Hadnt seen that it years. hopefully you can dig out cover and block is free, otherwise your in for long job of tear down and clean up.
If cover passages are good, you might get away with weak muriactic acid cleaning, dont think you can get the old powdered solder seal rad cleaner anymore, it would eat most of that away, but couldnt leave in rad for long either.

Ok. Well Im replacing water pump, add tstat (didnt have one, Im worried) have to remove the timing cover cause of broken bolts =( I ran the water hose thru all the ports of the engine till flowed clear. I guess I should send out the radiator for a rod/boil.
Oh and thank you for the input guys!!

Have you seen Jimmy Vaughns green caddy? You WILL get some inspriation from it!
      Cool car!
Pull the drain plugs from the side of the block and punch them with a screwdriver to clear them while flushing. I do like the muratic acid idea and then flush out tho. But that may kill the already ancient freeze plugs.
