four point seatbelt without a roll bar???

A question,

I have a 68 Camaro that will be a street car. I want it to be as safe as I can get it.

I know lap belts are worthless and I really don't like the look of the three point seat belt. I want to put in a set of four point seat belts.

So there are lots of post that say "do not use four point seatbelts with out a roll cage becuase if the roof collapses your head will have no where to go."

So I was going to install a rool hoop, and then I run accross all these comments that say. "A roll bar is a bad idea unless you are going to wear a helmet all the time because if your head hits it in an accident you are dead"

Any accident is bad, but I have to make a decision on what is most likely. I am thinking that I will run a four point seat belt with out a roll bar because the odds of me being crushed by the roof are far less than the odds of me hitting or being hit by somebody and eating the windsheld without a strap accross my shoulders.

The seat belt will be mounted to the points in the back seat and run through the harness holes in the Recaro seats I have.

I know it's not perfect but I want to here your thoughts.

These harnesses have ASM technology and are designed to allow use in cars without a roll bar or cage. Surf around the Schroth site to learn about ASM and watch the videos etc.

I owned these harnesses and used them until I put a full cage and 6 point harnesses in. High quality harnesses with smooth funtions and are street legal.

If your plans are purely street and auto-x and your intent is simply to strap your carcass down then I'd be ok with it while recognizing the ABSOLUTE need to wear them properly. The Schroth system is nice.

If you are going to track it at all, you really ought to have rollover protection and proper harnesses.

The four point mounts on a bar behind the seat at a specified height according to your physical stature. This is so that you do not suffer spine damage in an accident where the belts hold you in position.

These 4 points won't help me. I need ones for the front and rear seats. If I put a bar in that still leaves the rear passngers out. And if I put in a semi cage(think to rollbars connected one for the front and one for the rear passengers.) then I have to worry about he rear passengers hitting their heads on the bars.

Im running the schroths and love them. Im keeping these for autocross until I put a cage in.

Did you just bolt them into the factory bolt holes for the rear seatbelt?

Also, I am really thinking that I will have them on most of the time and deffenitly when highway driving. Since you have this thing locking your shoulders into place I have to think that it gets old after awhile.

What are your experiences?

There's also the Morris Classic Concepts 3pt belts that will keep your face from eating the windshield in a street driven car. They're not as racey as a 4 pt but everyone that uses them in a street car has positive reviews.

Here is why I bring this up.

This is a four point rally style belt with a retractor on it.

I am thinking that what I will do is mount the retractor behind the rear seat. (Drill a hole & reinforce it and bolt it in).

Then I will run it through the seat to me. When I want to have someone sit in the back I can disconnect it, let it retract into the seat and a person can now sit back there.

Thoughts?

Oh, and no it won't be yellow.

David they bolted right in no problem. Its not as relaxing as a 3 point. I leave a little slack in them so I can reach the window crank and stereo when cruising.
