sealing the back of patch panels

I'm repairing the previous owners sad attempt at installing speakers in the doors so i can install a new set in fresh metal. How would I go about sealing the back of the patch panel? I cant get in there to paint. The hole i'm patching held a 6x9. I dont want it to rust through from the back.
