      Newbie needing help !!!

I'm in the begining stage of my project. I have a 69 Camaro and want to know if anyone has run a 20 in the rear and if so what sizes work with the mini tub and or if I have to go with a full tub ? I want to run a wheel with a decent lip on the wheel in the rear and want to know what the process is for figuring out all the info and where to start . Thanks guys, I'm extremely new to this so much help would be greatly appreciated !!

With a mini tub you can squeeze a 20x12 with a 335 in the rear. If you want to have a bigger wheel "lip" you need to narrow the rear end. Give me a call at the shop tomorrow and we can discuss what your plans for the car are and help get you going in the right direction.

You can run a 20 X 10 in a stock tub. Problem is you have to be very careful with tire selection. If you want to run a 18' or 19" front you have to really watch the aspect ratio on the tires so you don't end up with a rubber band on the rear and a lot of tire around the rim up front. You can narrow the rear slightly without tubbing and get a nice lip, pick up about a inch of lip and save a ton of cash on a mini tub. With tubs as mentioned 335s are no problem, even 345s can be stuffed in mini tubs. Also, you will have to run some type of rear suspension other then leaf springs, something in a 4 link or torque arm. We have 5 different products for that we sell and install on a regular basis.

We do a ton of Camaros, here are just a couple we have done to look at, see a lot more on our website at

      Our Project Prodigy 67 has 345 / 20s

      295 / 19 on front

      Todds 69 payback has 345 / 19s which is a great look.

      Here's a couple 69s we've put 19s and 20s on with 245s and 275 in stock wheelwells.

I am just working on a 69 Camaro of my own and thinking 20" wheels in the rear. As the others have advised it is all about the tire selection if you choose the stock wheel tubs and 20x12 is no problem with a mini tub.

Check out our website at www.bonspeedWheels.com we have a huge gallery of cars and adding more every week.

Thanks I'm really taking it all in. I'm wanting to run the 20 in the rear, but don't want a rubber band tire by any means. I'm looking to build this car as a daily driver and want to drop it until I can get some air bags on it. I want enough room to run the 20's and the bags in the future. Will the mini tubs be my best bet ? If so the mini tub kit from detroit speed looks pretty complete. How do y'all fair on that ?

You don't need mini-tubs to run bags as the typical mini-tubs go in-board not up so your ride height won't change, only allow you more wheel and tire width unless you do a custom tub that is raised. You can get nice and low with stock wheelwells and a 40 series tire but if you want to go beyond 275 mm wide, go with mini-tubs.

DriverzInc set me up with a 305mm rear tire on a 20x10, and I think it looks great. I didn't want the "rubber-band" look either.

If I remember right, it is a 305/35/20.

What is the largest tire I could run if I kept the factory tubs and didn't go with the mini tub ? I think the 20x10's would be ok since I'd just narrow the rear to achieve the 3-4 in lip I desire. I'm about to replace the trunk pan and quarters so I'd like to do it now if I'm going to do it. Thanks Guys !

Jason is correct, 20 X 10 with a 275 tire is the max with a stock tub.

In a stock wheel well, we've done as much as a 285/30/20 as well as a 275/35/20. I like the look of the 285/30/20.

      As spec'd from Nitto:
      275/35/20 is 10.91 wide, and 27.6 tall.

      285/30/20 is 11.02 wide, and 26.9tall.

hey guys, i spoke to one of my friends who works as a service manager at goodyear.he said 20 in rim gives a much rougher ride compared to say an 18 in. is this true ? and are there advantages to running different size rims ex. 18 in in front 19 in in back hope this is not off the subject . dave d

The less sidewall, the firmer the ride but a well designed suspension will soak up a lot of the ride and since the emphasis of this site is musclecars built to handle and be driven hard, we make all kinds of compromises that other people might not tolerate because these aren't new Buicks built for a blue hair. Just the same as a person who buys a Z06 instead of a 6 cylinder Camaro. He has different goals and is willing to make compromises to get them.

The typical reason for staggering the diameter front to rear is because the rear diameter won't turn comfortably in the front wheelwells and to get it to sit as low as possible without rubbing and it looks cool. It's also inspired by modern supercars that stagger the diameters for the same reasons.

Thanks Guys ! I'm going to the tire shop today to checkout the amout of rubber this is in person and try to find a set of wheels not @2400 that I like, but not having much luck. Anyone know of a good 5 spoke design or something similar to the Driver Series Spark by Budnik that isnt $$$$$ ?? I know these things aren't cheap, but I'm looking for a good deal.

Personally i would go 18s and 19s. The 245/40/18 front and 275/35/19 rear is the perfect combo for this. They give a perfect tire and wheel rake with both the rear rim and tire each being 1" taller then the front wheel tire package. And also maintianing the same amount of rubber around the wheels

Here is a car we did with this exact package on it,

You can see more of this car in Camaro Performers this month.
