      Sub location in 69 Camaro

I am planning on running 1 12" sub in a custom box. Would it sound better with the speaker facing the rear of the seat or in the middle of the rear deck panel.

      Rear deck.

We mounted a 10" in the rear deck of our 68 and it sounds great.

12' will be tight though. You could do a band pass encloser and port it through the rear deck.

Bass frequencies are non-directional...meaning you can put them wherever you need to. I have 2 10's in my '69 Camaro, and they face into the trunk with plenty of bass! They are in a box over the axle right behind the rear seat. My buddies and I always made the box fit the car and then figure out speaker placement. It may a be a little better facing up into the rear deck, but only if you cut a hole for it! Some 12's need a lot of enclosure space...make sure you read the manufactures specs and get out your calculator! Good luck!

hey don't mean to high jack here, but I just got an infinty 12" sub and building a custom box, do you guys think 1 12 will be enough? I'm looking for STRONG bass, nothing too over the top, a good balance that can be used with rap AND rock...

Chris, a single 12" is plenty for strong bass. I used a single 12 in a sealed box in my 2002 Sound quality world champion all I needed.

Boxes make it lower and sharper, where as a good free air adds more subtle bass and less "hit" .
Big trick is using inductor coils on subs and as you lower the ohm ratings the higher the rating needs to be.
This is called crossing in the first order and honestly I have never found that I needed to do much more in a car.
Lots of guys buy big dollar electronics and yet I have put many systems together using "caps and coils" Capacitor to cross the highs and mids and inductor "coils" on my subs to "cross" them so only lower end of the signals go through the speekers.
My 71 Monte had 2 10" Blaupunkt Pro Components mounted facing forward to the rear seat upright, and my 6x9s mounted normally and the car was awesome sounding.
The car before it was in was my 70 and I had cut out the package tray and rear seat firewall and mounted a 2'x4' peice of plywood and my Marantz amp too, I really need to scan that pic.
And it turns out the amp is one of only 1500 ever made!
That system made 360 wats total, set down a RTA of 39 out of 40 with front speakers and 36 in the 71 Monte, RTA is Real Time Analyzation or how well the music synced up, too much electronics and it goes down.
On a 4 ohm system, keep your RMS input no more than 90% of the RMS speaker rating, this protects the voice coils, I really prefer to keep it in the 80% but that setup I had issues on finding speakers that went much over 100watts RMS.
But crossed as they were I could get about 2 years out of 6x9s and I never lost a sub, well except for the one I left on the roof of a car.
I prefer 10"s over 12"s but thats me. 1 to 2 10"s and couple of 8"s in rear seat area, couple of 6x9s in rear package, some 4 1/2s, 5s, or 6 1/4 or 6 1/2s up front say in doors or kick panels and couple of tweeters in a pillars or up in head liner or my favorite the rearview mirror mounted tweeters.

IMO two tens is gobs. I would spend more on dynamat and get the system "tuned" rather than how many or how much. The right speakers with proper placement makes all the difference. Unless you want to break out the 80's spandex butt rock and mullet wig than hell...cram them anywhere you can!

I'm fighting with myself right now on the orientation of the subs.

I've been doing car audio for almost 22 years and in the past I would fire the subs towards the rear. In my old hatchbacks it would hit pretty hard because of the boost from corner loading. Hatchbacks are nice because the subs are still inside the car.

But now I don't know if I want to fire my sub towards the rear in my 76 camaro because of all the metal it has to find it's way through to get into the interior for good sound. This would be even more of a task if I build wooden trim panels to make the trunk more finished out.

By firing the subs towards the rear complete with trim panels it would essentially be no different than putting subs in the bed of a truck. Or it seems.

I'm thinking about cutting the center of my rear deck and firing a single 8" or 10" sub through the rear deck in an enclosure. This will allow the subwoofer to take use of the glass to provide a little boost.

      Opinions or suggestions?

      Subwoofer idea

I purchased the Infinity Kappa series BASSLINK II. It is fully enclosed including the amp and has an expansion slot for a 4 channel amp to power the other speakers. you can mount vertical or flat. I have a 69 Camaro and wanted good clean sound, but without the appearance of a sub existing. Found that with the mounts in the flat position it can be mounted to the underside of the rear deck and barely visible.

Can't comment on sound yet since car isn't finished being built, but should be good.
