      Mickey thompson s/r tires

MT radials 20" diameter 18" wide require a 15" wide wheel. MT recomends a 13" or 14" wheel for there new 15" wide tire. Does this math make sence to anyone? why is it ok for 1.5" excess for one but only a 1/2" excess for the other.

Would you atempt to run the 15" wide tire on a 12" wide wheel (1.5 excess both sides)?

      Any advise?

What is the aspect ratio difference between the two? A taller sidewall can run a narrower rim because the sidewall has the "room" to move. A shorter aspect ratio tire needs a rim closer to the actual sidewall width because the sidewall can't reach the narrower width and maintain proper bead seating under load.

      I totally agree,
My understanding is that mickey thomson tires don't measure on a standard aspect ratio theory.

both tires are for 20" diameter wheels and both wheels are 29" in outside diameter which means same sidewall height????

Ah, I see. Looking at it from that respect I would surmise the "recommended" width is based on what is readily available for rim sizes. A 20 x 15" rim is (sic) a standard size.... Going wider will be more expensive which would probably drive away potential customers.
As for running the 15" wide tire on a 12" inch rim. Go for it. Isn't going to hurt a thing. Manufacturers usually allow for an inch either way (narrower or wider) and the extra tire overhang will protect the rims from curbing.
