first gen with 1 wire alternator
with the exception of electric fans and a vintage air kit my electrical system is mostly stock right now. I'd like to add a 100amp 1-wire self regulating alternator with upgraded alt wires. I don't understand what happens with the stock voltage regulator or more specifically all the wires feeding from it.

I almost went the same lway your headed with my first generation camaro. I did some research and found a better charging system. Mark at madelectrical has a good write up that explains both system and the advantages and disadvantages of both. Here is a link to madelectrical: http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...hreewire.shtml.
I would recomend going with the three wire, not hard at all to wire up.

(thanks a lot
. regardless of the 1 vs. 3 wire debate my question
should have really been: with an upgrade to a self regulating alt
what is the correct way to rewire once the divorced voltage regulator is removed?
com'on fellas I know lots of you have done this.david

I thought the one wire thing was the way to go. Even put a larger cable from the alternator to the battery..thought I was cool! I am now going to change to the "MAD" way...makes a lot of sense. They have schematics on the website listed, and have some nice technical articles into why and how. My 105 amp alternator has never shown more than 12ish volts. Re-read the article and get your wiring back to what was done stock. It looks like they use the stock regulator. Read this section here

buy their book, then call and ask questions...these guys make sense!
